How are aircraft config files edited in Windows 8?

Featured Replies

How are aircraft config files edited in Windows 8, such as when adding new aircraft textures? Apparently the old system using a text editor does not exist in OS 8.

You should be able to double-click the config and, if it says there is no program for opening this file, tell it to find one for you on your computer. It will then give you an option for Notepad.

Best regards,

Jim

Another thought is you could always dump 8 and go back to 7...

Win8 is good, it's a much better version of Win7 but with a fancy program running on the front that's taken over the Win7 menu duties. I always used shortcut groups kept in folders anyway so it's no different.

In explorer folder properties security make sure the User group rights have write and modify. Right click on the .cfg and choose Open With and find notepad.exe, once you did that it remembers, then next time it makes it the default choice.

Win 8 is not a much better version of Win7. It's only Win7 Sp2 microsoft refused to release in order to force people to buy Win8.

Perhaps you should have told MS not me!

Still no joy on the config file changes. System will not let me save the changes that I made on Notepad. Any other ideas? Hopefully someone who actually has the Windows 8 on their system?

In explorer folder properties security make sure the User group rights have write and modify.

if you are unsure about folder rights you can copy the .cfg to the desktop and modify it there then copy back...

in explorer, right click on:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9

and choose Properties

now choose Security

now Edit

choose "Users" from the list

check Modify and Write

OK - OK - and allow to set on all folders and files

Did you install FS in win8 as the administrator? Or are you signed in as the admin. Did you turn off UAC before installing FS? If not windows will not allow you to modify files.

Don't forget if you cannot work out the changes to the FS9 directory security Users group, you can make a copy of the .cfg file on the desktop and edit it there, then you can copy it back but will be asked to OK the file overwrite.

Thanks, Steve and Big Mack. Those replies are very helpful. I got the changes made as you instructed, but all that admin stuff has me a bit confused. Obviously the purpose of Windows 8 was not to make life any easier! I just followed the prompts when installing FS9. Who knew?

Another thing: none of the aircraft images show up in the flight planner menu.

  • Commercial Member

Well when you edit files in the aircraft folder or add a dodgy aircraft, then problems like that can arise.

Program Files is supposed to be a read only directory so we expect to have to enable Write permissions. It’s just that back in the days of WinXP everyone had Admin privileges and the bad guys found security was easy to circumvent.

If you installed FS9 into the Programs Files(x86) folder, then you must highlight and right click the "Flight Simulator 9"folder.

Then Select the security tab. Look the group and users names and look for icon that says everyone. If it's not there you need to create one by clinking the "Edit" button. Then click add. In box that pops up, Type "Everyone" in bottom box and select ok. Now you should see "Everyone" in top group box. High light it, then look in bottom box that says permissions for everyone. Put chech mark in allow column for all except "Special Permissions". It apply, Ok, Ok. I can't remember if you need to reboot system, but you should be able to have full access to your FS9 folder now.

There must be something to this, because even with the changes in the aircraft file made and saved, the OS will not read the changes. This apparently means that you have to install software with the UAC turned off if you are ever going to want to add new paints or modify the tail-draggers to respond to a joystick instead of break pedals. Whatever the reasons for the creation of Windows 8 were, they're lost on me. Give me a simpler world, please?

A world where you don't need to lock your door isn't coming any time soon.
