Misty Fjords FS9 reinstall problem

Featured Replies

Hi,

Hopefully someone might be able to help with this. Am in the process of a fresh re-install of FS9 into my new Windows 7 64-bit rig, but I have come across a problem with Misty Fjords, which will not install from the FSQuality CD nor will it install from a copy of the CD files which I transferred to my desktop, which sometimes seems to succeed.

From the online research I have done, I understand that it is not possible to install the CD version of Misty Fjords on Windows Vista so I guess the same thing might apply to Windows 7, but I read somewhere that there is some sort of fix available for a Misty Fjords Vista install, so I am hoping someone out there may know of something similar for W7. Unfortunately the Misty Fjords support forum on the SimFlight site appears to have been locked and it is not possible to start a new topic there.

As this is amongst my favourite addons, I am very keen to get it up and running again and I even thought about buying the FSAddon download version from SimMarket, but am worried that this too might not be compatible with installation of Windows 7. Has anyone got any experience at all of installing Misty Fjords with W7?

Thank you in anticipation,

Bill

Try Francois' blog at :

or his facebook page.

For us Misty is indispensable, but for Francois ... old news? One can only try.

Thanks for the reply.

I have had a trawl through Francois' blog on that site, but unfortunately couldn't find anything related to this problem. As you say, Misty is indispensible - it is one of my all time favourite scenery areas to fly in and one that I go back to again and again, so not being able to reinstall this is a bit of a body blow! I would go so far as buying it again if I thought the SimMarket download would install on Windows 7, but I don't want to spend my money on it until I get confirmation that it will install.

Surely somebody out there has bought the FSAddon FS9 Misty download and tried to install to Windows 7?

That can be a go around for this .....

Try to make a RIP from a installation in Windows XP or whatever and paste it in your F2004 Win7 install

I had the download version of Misty on my XP system. I recently moved to Windows 7, and in my case, the Misty re-instal went without a glitch.

I'm unaware of any problems installing this product on Vista or Windows 7 other than Windows 7 has additional security features that allows installation programs to read files but not write to them (like maybe to your scenery.cfg). This can be fixed easily by disabling User Access Controls before installing FS9 or any addons. User Access Controls can be disabled (temporarily or permanently) by clicking on the Start button, typing User Access in the search box then looking up in the menu and clicking on How to Change User Access Controls. Once there, move the slider down to disable it. Now install your programs. When finished you can keep UAC disabled or go back and enable it. I personally keep mine disabled. You should look at the pinned topic in the Windows 7 forum here on AVSIM. There's a special method required to get the scenery to appear in the Scenery Library. If you follow that, you should have no problems manually enabling Misty in your Scenery Library.

Best regards,

Jim

Thanks Jim. I did actually do a lot of background reading before I started the fresh installation of FS9 on WIn7 including the various relevant threads on the Windows 7 forum, so, like you, I have had UAC disabled continuously since the very beginning. The problem seems to be that the start application does not like the 64-Bit system, as I get a "Platform Error" message saying that the "application is not designed to run on Windows 64-Bit Edition!". I viewed the files on the Misty CD to see if I could manually install them, as I am reasonably familiar with where everything should go in FS9, but when I try to open the cab files, I get a message saying "Cannot open the cabinet file" and again I am assuming this could be a 64-Bit problem?

I am thinking of possibly trying to do this on a friends XP setup and then pasting into my FS9 from a flash drive.

If all else fails I will buy the Misty download and hope for the best!

I found this program that might help you - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7.

I also found this link so it might not be possible - http://forums.fsaddon.eu/viewtopic.php?t=1603&sid=a926dcd4a67bd9aba1c45376e168a869. Apologize if you already saw this. I looked through the above posts and did not see where you had.

I installed Misty Fjords into my new Win 7 computer from a backup made from my old XP computer and adding it the usual way through Settings/Library etc. Did this with all my add on scenery installing each one individually, bit of a pain but they work. Hope you succeed.

Thanks again you all your efforts Jim - I really appreciate that. I hadn't actually seen that second link which seems essentially to describe the same problem that I am having and sadly it doesn't seem that any solution was forthcoming in that thread either.

I actually went out to a friend's house this afternoon, installed a vanilla copy of FS9 into his XP computer, then loaded Misty into a separate folder on that computer before copying it to a flash drive. I have now managed to install it manually onto my WIn7 FS9 and I am pleased to say it works! The only slight problem that I have identified so far is that the two AI cruise liners (the Volendam and the Island Princess) seem to have become transposed on the FS9 map so that if you fly to the Volendam you find the Island Princess in that position and vv! Something to do with their AFCADs I guess but I will try to suppress the obsessional part of me that has to sort out every problem I come across!! Just relieved to have Misty back! Now keeping fingers crossed while I try to install Tongass and Glacier Bay!
