MD 11 and Autopilot

Featured Replies

Ok i am still new with the MD 11 i just got it last week or so and i am learning , But i am confused about how this autopilot works , so for example i am Flying on line and ATC asks me to descend and start heading 230 for example ,,

So I turn the knob to heading 230 and press nav nothing works i pull it out or push in it goes back to where it was , so i decide to disconnect A/P every thing starts flashing and i cant get it to go to the heading that i want , so i press the A/P again and know the Aircraft is back making circles trying to Fallow Flight Plan but not what ATC or me want ..

Same thing for descend

Can any one help out i did read the tutorial , it would be great if you can tell me how you do it thank you

I am still learning that part as well, however I believe if you pull the knob it will respond. Using the Nav should engage the FMC/CDU. Hopefully someone with more experience will help out.

Welcome to the wonderful MD-11, it is a magnificient aircraft.

You should fly the two tutorials too, they will shed light over the differences between MD and Boeing.

When you are on PROF and NAV and FMS SPEED and AUTOFLIGHT is active, and ATC vector you to a heading, set the correct heading and pull the knob. Same thing with speed and altitude.

Good luck, and have fun!

Hello my dear friend Mosteen thank you for the tip ,, and thank you G_ for the Link i will Look at

Just a Quick Note Although i am flying on line , with the MD 11 i am pretty much using the same flex and the same flaps as the tutorial because i figured i will be safe with these settings , so my question is ,,,,, is there an other flex number and a flaps setting for takeoff i can use and still be on the safe side ?? i am pretty much always fully Loaded and i can see the aircraft is doing every thing it can for take off HOW can i give it a Little more Boost for take off ???

thank you

Have a look at TOPCAT...it will give you correct flex temp setting for your airport. If you are worried about not having enough power just use a lower flex number ...30 for example.... or none!

I second the advice of TopCat, it will calculate everything you need with regards to derated thrust, advice flaps and so on. When flying heavy birds like MD with realism, TopCat is a must.

Also, the best ever flightplanner, PFPX, that is soon to be released will be populated by data from TopCat if you have both programs. Same author makes them.

Hi,

As you noticed, the MD-11 autopilot logic is diffrent than what most simmers are used to from Boeing aircrafts.

Basically you preselect where you want to go and then tell the autopilot to go there.

If you followed the flight plan and ATC gives you a heading (vector) you simply dial it in with the heading selector. Now you tell the autopilot, thats where you want to go by pulling it (right click).

The same thing for the altitude selector. First, preselect to which altitude you want to go, and then applying it by pulling the altitude selector.

As you noticed, you can also push the heading and altitude selector. This is another handy feature of the MD-11.

Basically if you follow a flight plan in NAV mode, you can push the heading selector. This will make the autopilot follow the actual heading.

Best regards,

Jonathan

Much the same as the Airbus. In (Auto/CDU mode), out (manual), turn. PRACTICE ALOT!

There is a user guide with TOPCAT that explains how to use it. Start menu/TopCAT/Documents
