February 13, 201313 yr I was out at Melbourne airport watching the landings of several 737 NG's and some had the retractable extended landing lights toggling from left to right. Is this an option or difference in any of the NGx's config ? Mostly they were Qantas, but not all. Another question, why do you have the option to extend them and not turn the lights on ? February 13, 201313 yr Alot of lights are retractable because of the drag. More lights gives you better visibility. On the DC10, the landing lights in the cheeks would rumble like the gear as they extended. The pulse lights are a safety thing. Makes you more recognizable. We have them on our G5/550s. We select pulse to get them to flash. I only use pulse in Africa and other areas with limited radar coverage. Rick D http://g5flyer.tumblr.com/
February 13, 201313 yr Also seen these on QANTAS NG's but with the tail light flashing - think they trialled this to distract birds/bird strike - they were doing this in and out of Adelaide but have seen this across Melbourne from the Tasman route. Jeff Blyth MD11 J41 747 NGX . . awaiting 777 !!!
February 13, 201313 yr Author I suppose maintenance would extend them without the lights being "on" for maint light replacement purposes. I have seen the tail lights flash also. On take off, would you use the retractable extended lights "on" if they pulse ? Cheers thanks. Vojislav Kostic
February 14, 201313 yr We have pulse lights on our dash 8's. I use pulse during the day in lieu of landing lights for takeoff and landing. Cheers, Todd ATP MEL Commercial SEL B-747, BE-300, BE-400, DHC8, ERJ 170/190, MU-300 C-17A Globemaster III
February 14, 201313 yr It's a Qantas option. Most of the Q-400's, a large chunk of 738 and 734's also have them installed. Cheers,John TavendaleTextures by Tavers - https://www.facebook.com/texturesbytavers

It's just strobe light which is installed on every 737. Rostyslav S Wanna fly 737NGX with turbulence?
February 14, 201313 yr It would be interesting to get a pulse option available with the NGX, for realisms sake when flying certain airlines. Thanks Matthew T Gardiner
February 14, 201313 yr Author Is it a seperate switch, or is it activated when the extended/retractable lights switches are on ? It would be cool if the NGX would simulate it. Vojislav Kostic
February 15, 201313 yr Is it a seperate switch, or is it activated when the extended/retractable lights switches are on ? It would be cool if the NGX would simulate it. Same switches. If the retractables are in EXTEND and the fixed are ON, then they pulse. If the fixed are OFF, then the retractables are off. Matt Cee
February 15, 201313 yr Author If the retractables are in EXTEND they are not "ON" illuminating in the NGX (3 pos sw, off, extend, on) Thanks anyway Vojislav Kostic
