Floating Airport Proposed For London

27L (and R) can't take any more traffic so if LHR were to get a third runway, you wouldn't have any extra aircraft over your house. Indeed, you may get less.

All the best,

Ian

I wish!!!

Seriously,

Worst case - they increase the amount of traffic handled by the capacity of the new runway (no extra aircraft over your house).

Best case - they don't increase the amount of traffic handled at all (33% less aircraft flying over your house).

Have I misunderstood something?

It's pure speculation as to what will happen in the future in the Heathrow area Ian.

And as regards as to why I, and many others, live within the flight path on the East or West of the glide paths in and out of Heathrow is because some generations were here first and in many cases, if not most, we are here for economic reasons. Not for one minute does anybody expect the miracle of immediate peace and quiet, it's just that it would be preferable if the load was better distributed. I dare say the good people of Hertfordshire and Surrey would be content with hundreds of homes and historical buildings surrounding Heathrow to be consigned to the skips to avoid further disruption to their sleep and allow another runway at Heathrow. But is another runway really the best solution to the whole question?

The buzz word seems to be 'HUB'. Why? If the infrastructure from A to B and then C to D etc. is efficient then why is there the need to cram everything in one place and then, just to remind everyone viewing so far, we wouldn't need to witness the loony idea that started this thread!

I'll put my coat back on. :(

Gatwick has the capacity and the room for another runway, the problem is a covenant that prevents anything from being built until 2019 (no way the stupid floating airport would even be started by then even if it got the go ahead now!). Combine that with a very high speed airside train link to Heathrow (it's circa 20 miles between the 2 as the crow flies) and you have something that would improve capacity, fit in with the 'hub' model and not cost anywhere near as much as trying to start from scratch in the Thames estuary. In fact, start the high speed link now and it might be ready for 2019 when you can build the 2nd runway at Gatwick...

That needs forward planning that also requires the ability to make a decision. Regretfully, the previous government had a deputy PM who kept banging on about " an intergrated transport policy" for 13 years but did nothing except get himself fat.

The present lot have other priorities but, I do agree with you that this would be the sensible approach re EGKK.

I'm afraid that the root of the decision making problem is votes.

Any extra runways at either Heathrow or Gatwick will also have to go through years of planning objections by NIMBYs (rightly or wrongly) and that will slow things down as well.
