March 3, 201313 yr I saw that last year when it was in the weekly AOPA bulletin I get in my email. It's actually a very good idea for really low volume field that still could benefit from a tower controller. I agree, the concept would keep costs low for smaller airfields and benefit airfields that are inside airspace for larger international airports that handle the airspace around them, it would give ATC at the larger airports a better view of what is going on at nearby airfields. I don't like the concept of putting services to tender outside the USA but do see the benefit of that in Europe. Some of the smaller nations may benefit from outsourcing these services to another EU nation to lower costs. Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
March 3, 201313 yr My opinion is this will not happen, (I know it did but...) we will not see the effects before its fixed. I think this does open the dialogue to closing some of them and that could be a good thing at the under-utilized towers, unless you're a controller at one of them (Sorry, I hope they offer you a fat retirement package or move you to your own paradise). We won't see the effects? We already are seeing them here. They already told Government employees to plan on working 4 days a week and their pay will be cut accordingly. That begins in the next week or two. Fixed? They have had over 18 months to avert this mess of THEIR own making. FY 13 Budget? There is'nt going to be a FY 13 Budget. There hasn't been a budget passed since 2008. The current "Continuing Budget Resolution" simply continues spending and taxiation at last years rate. Closing under utilized towers and airports is a good thing. Small airport airline subsidies get the ax too. Raptor
March 3, 201313 yr I'm just talking about tower closings. I'm not going to get involved in a conversation on the sequester any more than that. Chuck Biggins
March 3, 201313 yr I'm just talking about tower closings. I'm not going to get involved in a conversation on the sequester any more than that. That's kool. But you stated we won't see the effects, when some of us are seeing those effects today. That was the point I was making, not trying to debate the sequester. Raptor
March 3, 201313 yr Author FY 13 Budget? There is'nt going to be a FY 13 Budget. There hasn't been a budget passed since 2008. So who voted for these leaders! This is on US! It is US that is the U.S. !!! The constituent voters !!!! Are we voting in what we believe? Or voting blindly for the political party mentioned on our voter registration cards? There is also a ton of political rhetoric in the descriptions of cuts. The total outflow (I refuse to use the term "budget") is just over 2%. That does not lead to the level of furloughs being publicized. This political rhetorical maneuvering has to stop. What a divisive America we have become !!!! March 3, 201313 yr We did. "We the People", as The Constitution sets out for election of our leaders. I agree with your description of the state of affairs we have found ourselves in today. Yes, it is on US. They (the ruling class,we elected and keep sending back to WDC) cut jobs and money for jobs for American citizens, but THEY still have their jobs and benefits, including exempting their staffs from such cuts and furloughs. Now, What is wrong with this picture? Raptor
March 3, 201313 yr Author Now, What is wrong with this picture? Simply put? It's those who vote !!!! Or? Is it those who do not vote ??? In any case it is putting aviation in peril !!! March 3, 201313 yr "In any case it is putting aviation in peril !!!" . It will have a detrimental effect on the industry, as is already beginning to happen as agencies prepare for a long slog with reduced funding. In the long term, peril just might become the operative word. We will have to wait and see. If there are reduced hours for inspectors, for example, that means longer times to wait to get their approval to go on to the next step. Longer wait times means idle time for mechanics and that burns up budget, and gets nothing done. No company would keep staffing levels up with that going on, so that does mean layoffs for people and their families. The time frame of this happening is the big question, the longer it goes on, the more likely layoffs will happen. It's simply, trickle down economics. I don't see this being "fixed" before the end of the fiscal year in Sept. And let's remember, at the end of March, we hit the debt ceiling again and the Yo-Yos in WDC are going to have to come up with yet ANOTHER spending "work around" to fund the Government yet again... But this is the way of this President and the Congress. Are you getting a sense of De Ja Vu ? AGAIN... Raptor
March 3, 201313 yr Aviation has been on a downward spiral for over 10 years now. It was once an affordable and enjoyable hobby. Not the same today. When I first went to flight school in 1996, a Cessna 150 was renting for $40/hour (dry) at Buttonville Airport in Toronto, try finding that today. Fuel wasn't too expensive back then either. Fuel keeps going up, Insurance Rates keep going up, Government Cuts, etc. Keeps going and going and going Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
March 3, 201313 yr But you stated we won't see the effects, when some of us are seeing those effects today. Once again, I'm just referring to tower closings. To the best of my knowledge no towers have been closed yet. If I'm wrong then I'm sorry and correct me on that. I said I was not referring to the sequester as a whole. I get it you're seeing effects if you're a DOD/gov't employee, that's not the original topic being discussed here. Chuck Biggins
