Addon Scenery Priority Level in Scenery Library

Featured Replies

I had a problem with my FSX Scenery.cfg and lost my Addon Scenery folder in the Library. What priority level should it be in the Library? Is there any place that has information as to the proper area number and level. Thanks, Bob.

Hi Bob!

The smaller or more detailed the area the scenery represents, the higher it should be in the library. That is a good rule of thumb.

There is no rule, if you do not use addon scenery folder to directly place your sceneries, you should not have addon scenery folder activated in library at all.

Hi all. Thanks. I do need the Addon Scenery folder in the Library. All I need is what priority level should it be. I have some scenery files in the Addon Scenery\Scenery folder. That's why I need it. Regards, Bob.

What kind of scenery you put in Addon Scenery\Scenery folder? Is it airport, landclass area, mesh area, photoscenery?

Corrrect me if I'm wrong, but I believe you can put any scenery bgl into the Addon Scenery/scenery folder that does not have an associated texture file that would go with it. I have scenery, mesh, airport and AFCAD bgl's in mine. If a texture file is required, I drop it into my FSX Texture folder.

Hi. I agree with you that's what I have in my Addon Scenery\Scenery folder. I am not asking what scenery goes where, I am just asking for the priority level of the Addon Scenery folder in the Library. Bob.

Content of addon scenery\Scenery folder will dictate priority level in library, there is no correct answer. By default, when you install fresh FSX, addon scenery folder has a highest priority (at the top of library).

Bob - in a default install of FSX, Addon Scenery is immediately above Propellor Objects. By 'above' I mean 'nearer the top of the screen'.

There are 115 default items altogether, and you should leave them as a group.

Did you try renaming your scenery.cfg (to scenery.cfg.old, for example) and letting FSX build a new one during a restart?

Hi Bob:

Using "Computer" (aka "Windows Explorer"):

A.) Navigate to [FSX install path]\ main folder

B.) Via Computer Menu > File  > New > Folder , I'd recommend creating the Addon Scenery folder chain so you have this structure:

1.) [FSX install path]\Addon Scenery <-- Top folder

2.) [FSX install path]\Addon Scenery\Scenery <-- Sub-folder

3.) [FSX install path]\Addon Scenery\Texture <-- Sub-folder

Then, IMHO, you should stay the course and do NOT change the Addon Scenery Area entry position in the FSX Scenery Library GUI stack of Area layers; place it immediately above the "Propeller Objects" as indicated above.

FYI: On some systems, with Windows Vista or Windows-7, if the Addon Scenery folder chain is physically missing (even if is empty of any files), FSX Scenery Library GUI stack of Area layers may show blank entries for some or all add-on Area layers above the default FSX layers normally found at the bottom of the stack of Area layers.

CAVEAT: In my experience, it seems that the Addon Scenery folder chain is always physically REQUIRED by FSX (even if is empty of any files).

Although technically one can move the Addon Scenery Area layer entry in the FSX Scenery Library GUI, IMHO, it is not a good idea to do that, as some add-ons with installers assume that the Addon Scenery subfolders can be used for certain BGL load sequences within the FS default layer scheme because it is presumed to always be located at the default position in the Scenery.Cfg stack of Area layers. :excl:

NOTE: If one has a group of files for a scenery package, it is better, IMHO, to create a new top folder under the [FSX install path]\Addon Scenery folder ...so that one has this structure:

1.) [FSX install path]\Addon Scenery\[add-on package name] <-- New "Top" folder

2.) [FSX install path]\Addon Scenery\[add-on package name]\Scenery <-- New Sub-folder

3.) [FSX install path]\Addon Scenery\[add-on package name]\Texture <-- New Sub-folder

BGLs go into the \Scenery folder; any provided 3rd party textures mapped to those BGLs always go into that local paired \Texture sub-folder.

One would then manually create an entry for that new scenery package folder chain via "Add Area" and via Move Up / Move Down, position the new Area entry at the desired location in the FSX Scenery Library GUI. :Nerd:

Hope this helps !

Hi. OK. Thanks. That's what I wanted to know. I'll put it there. Regards, Bob.

Hi Mike. Thanks. I did just that and before I had 175 layers in my Scenery.cfg file. After allowing a rebuild it made 120 layers and none of the sceneries I had in my Addon Scenery folder were recognized. The last layer was 120 and was Addon Scenery. I restored it back to the way it was an I regained all of my Addon Scenery files. Regards, Bob.

Hi Gary. Thanks. That's exactly what I have. I have a great many individual sceneries in the Addon Scenery folder all with specific name and sub directories of Scenery and Texture. I also have Scenery and Texture subdirectories in Addon Scenery. Everything shows up in the Library. I also had a lot of items in the Addon Scenery\Scenery folder (like bgls, etc) that were installed there when I installed the scenery items. Somehow I lost the entry for the Addon Scenery folder in my scenery.cfg. Without the Addon Scenery folder called out in the library I was not able to use the items that were in my Addon Scenery\Scenery folder. By adding the Addon Scenery in the Library and placing it at the top all works well now. Bob.

Hi Bob:

I had not initially mentioned the process of manually putting back an entry for the default Addon Scenery layer into the FSX Scenery Library GUI via "Add Area" in the steps I posted above, because usually when I see this scenario, someone has dragged or otherwise moved their entire [FSX install path]\Addon Scenery\ physical folder chain somewhere.

Thus, I initially focused on making sure it was physically present in its assigned location by re-creating it, instead of first asking if already existed and was positioned where it belongs in the FSX folder chain; sorry if that may have been out of sequence with your immediate needs.

FYI: When I reply to some threads, I tend to post content which is intended to be educational for others who may also be reading such threads in the future ...in addition to responding to the party who initially asked a question as OP.   Now and then when addressing an "overall topic" and any potential complications one might incur if one acts on certain info posted by other respondents in a thread, I inadvertently overlook directly answering the primary "question" the OP is asking (which I seem to done here, to some extent).

Glad to see you've now got all your individual files and nested 3rd party scenery packages safely intact inside [FSX install path]\Addon Scenery\ folder chain, and that the layer entries for those Areas have all been restored in the FSX Scenery Library GUI.

Happy Flying ! B)

Hi Gary. Thanks for the great information. It really helped me to understand the scenery.cfg. I think I know how I manually deleted the Addon Scenery folder from it by mistake when I was fixing another scenery that I had removed. I appreciate the help. It's a shame that MS did not add a section to the SDK to explain the scenery.cfg file and it's structure. Best regards, Bob.
