March 18, 201313 yr Haha... Well that was a very old video, but I enjoyed seeing the old steam gauge cockpits again. How things have changed since that video was made. CRM is a great program, and automation certainly has helped, but too much automation can cause work overload in a negative way. The level of automation is starting to effect situation awareness, and sometimes pilots need to turn off automation and just fly the plane (if they still can).Sorry Ró :Just Kidding: RJ
March 18, 201313 yr sometimes pilots need to turn off automation and just fly the plane (if they still can). Perhaps the economic benefits for airlines of automated flight (usually more efficient) often pressure commercial pilots not to fly manually for long periods?
March 18, 201313 yr Perhaps the economic benefits of automated flight for airlines (usually more efficient) occasionally pressure commercial pilots not to fly manually for long periods? Totally agree with that statement Owen. My point was direct at pilots that use automation to try and get out of abnormal situations, when they should be turning off automation and flying the plane. Automation most certainly is the most efficient way to fly... RJ
March 19, 201313 yr The article hits quite a few valid points...I remember meeting Japanese pilots who were going from an ab-initio pilots course, with roughly 200 hours TOTAL, and straight on the right hand seat of an A320. On the other hand, it is impressive to see the results of incidents and accidents were the pilots have had a lot of "hands-on" experience. I am lucky enough to be running an interview with Captain Richard de Crespigny for Avsim, the pilot in command of the QANTAS A380 that blew an engine out of Singapore, and nearly became the worls'd worst single aeroplane disaster. Having read his book and spoken to the man himself, you get the feeling of just how much knowledge he has behind him. Will Reynolds Flight Sim Addict
March 19, 201313 yr Cockpit automation, which level of automation should you be flying in?RJhttp://youtu.be/h3kREPMzMLk
March 19, 201313 yr Sorry Ró :Just Kidding: Don't worry, I'm highly against the over reliance on automation. Even back before we took on Airbus aircraft we were big on hand flying and manual flying skills on basic instruments, and it's stood to us through the years, our incidents of handling error are very low, not one in the last 3 months which is something pretty amazing for an airline our size. I always find it very unusual looking back and talking with old aviators about the time before the era of CRM, and the way they flew aircraft back then, I don't think I could ever imagine working in an atmosphere...
