There are two lessons here:

 

1) Never leave me unsupervised with critical equipment.  It can and WILL fail.

 

2) There is a reason for the checklist- and me of ALL people should have no problems adhering to one.  :P

Moral of the story is don't install Windows updates, only install service packs.

Bottom line: Hotfixes (Windows update) are only meant to be applied on a need-only basis as they are untested, period.

 

I never run Windows update for this reason, and I never have problems as a result.
