March 31, 201313 yr DX10 fixes all under a single easy to use app now that would be cool Sir Rich Sennett
March 31, 201313 yr On a side note, and taking Paul's info into consideration, I removed my MipBias setting completely and it does indeed seem to have no impact. I appreciate you reporting this. After your previous reply to me on the subject of MipBias, I went back and reintroduced it at various levels from 5 through 8. I still couldn't see any difference. I assume I had some other setting some where that was masking the benefit, so i just kept quiet. :-) [email protected] - ROG Strix Z790-E - 2X16Gb G.Skill Trident DDR5 6400 CL32 - MSI RTX 4090 Suprim X - WD SN850X 2 TB M.2 - XPG S70 Blade 2 TB M.2 - MSI A1000G PCIE5 1000 W 80+ Gold PSU - Liam Li 011 Dynamic Razer case - 58" Panasonic TC-58AX800U 4K - Pico 4 VR HMD - WinWing HOTAS Orion2 MAX - ProFlight Pedals - TrackIR 5 - W11 Pro (Passmark:12574, CPU:63110-Single:4785, GPU:50688)
March 31, 201313 yr Great topic! So - I tried the -1 setting for the LOD Bias, with 4xMS and 4xSGSS, plus the 4 and 4 set inside the {Graphics} section of the cfg, and took a number of flights in and around the PNW, with no sign of any shimmering and little or no aliasing problems. I think this is a really good combination. Anacortes is particularly heavy on frame rates, with sporadic drops to 24 - 5 - 6, etc.. Too, on the northerly approach to Darrington, the clouds and mist show their impact with a few dips into the mid-20's. Here are the cfg and SweetFX's settings. Thanks for your massive input, Rob - keep us posted!! i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
March 31, 201313 yr I remember cockpit shadows coming up a while ago, too, Jim Hi Paul, Yes, it has been almost a constant topic of discussion and when I get some jaggies, I just disregard them as most of the time while I'm flying the jaggies are not there. I have a question about your AF setting. You have it set to Application Controlled but still set it to 16x's in the NI setting. I think Application Controlled takes precedence over other settings. I think User-Defined would be the proper setting. As of right now, this instance, this period in time, I have my Texture Filtering set to User-defined and 8x. This is my current NI: In any case, I am more than pleased with DX10 and look at it as the ultimate until someone can bring us DX11. March 31, 201313 yr Hi Jim! It's still at 16 'coz I can only concentrate on one thing at a time! (gettin' old). I was more following the gist of some of the info from the links in Rod's posts concerned the LOD Bias settings, along with making the two cfg settings the same as the NI settings. The pics don't show their best, as they're reduces by size and jpeg'ing, but I was surprised with the non-appearance of any shimmering, along with "adequate" AA, and a smoother "feel" to the sim. In defense of the 16x, the last few weeks have been spent doing some VB programming (along the lines of Rob's (robains) posts above), plus Patch version testing vis a` vis the Maddog at night using the FSDreamTeam and FlightBeam's SOCAL airports, (also working with Les (Mavrick) - him larnin' RC4+FSBuild - great fun!), plus some hardware upgrades (a Samsung Pro SSD for FSX). I reckon you are probably right, though: if it's app-controlled, then the 16x would seem redundant, wouldn't it! All the best, i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
March 31, 201313 yr How do I maintain the LOD > 4.5? In the fsx.cfg? and how do I keep it there without FSX resetting it back? On a side note..I used to get heavy stuttering in DX10 so I went back to DX9. But the OOM pretty much killed me..so I came back to DX10. This time there is no stuttering. I don't believe I have done anything special this timne. Hmmm... But my FPS are tad down... It maybe on the account of my SweetFX? Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
March 31, 201313 yr [TERRAIN] LOD_RADIUS=4.500000 This will stay there if you enter it as above, or with the slider full right, Manny... it only gets put back to this setting if you set it higher (in the cfg) than the slider can go. March 31, 201313 yr In any case, I am more than pleased with DX10 and look at it as the ultimate until someone can bring us DX11. Here is a good video of the differences in DX10 and DX11 - but it's important to understand these differences require appropriate coding to make them happen ... it's not just a switch you turn on/off. Also notice that in DX11 frame rates drop ... the enhanced visuals don't come for free, they induce a performance hit. I'm NOT trying to be negative about DX11, but I think some people have unrealistic expectations of what DX11 will bring to the table in terms of FSX - especially those looking for improved frame rates are going to be in for a big shock! What I think will benefit FSX (in terms of frame rates) is adding multi-threading support specific to running multi-cores on multi-GPU systems ... but this isn't "new" to DX11 ... DX10 supports this also (even DX9c if coded carefully). But keep in mind that to get the best visuals and performance benefits out of DX10/DX11 you really need different texture sets (implications here are pretty significant).

All the Best, Paul I want to try 5.5 so how do I keep there... Do people go and edit the file every time before loading FSX? Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
March 31, 201313 yr .. and I might add, Rob - a good measure of "giving up the old stuff" (like my Maddog...) :( PaulI want to try 5.5 so how do I keep there... Do people go and edit the file every time before loading FSX? It'll stay as long as you don't change anything which will result in a write to the config. If that happens - it'll be back to default (which might be 3.5). i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
March 31, 201313 yr Oh OK... But I just tried 5.5 but it doesn't even load. IT goes into FSX Not responding. Hmm.. Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter

March 31, 201313 yr Wow that dx11 is impressive. Agree ... if anyone watched that video of DX10 vs. DX11 be sure to set it to 1080 HD as it will make the differences that much easier to spot. But notice how much DX11 version lags behind and stutters compared to DX10 which is much more fluid. I love the visuals of DX11 but for better frame rates, DX10 wins.
