April 6, 201313 yr So i guess this is really old news, but i was wondering how many operators besides Air New Zealand uses the 330 minute ETOPS rules for the 777? April 7, 201313 yr Air Canda on a couple of polar routes maybe? There are not many routes where you need ETOPS-330 John-Alan Pascoe
April 7, 201313 yr I thought that the highest that an ETOPS could adhere to was 240 minutes. On further inspection I can find a lot of video's and article's from news websites but nothing from the British CAA or the American FAA
April 7, 201313 yr On December 12, 2011, Boeing received type-design approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for up to 330-minute extended operations for its 777 fleet. This certification applies to the 777-200LR, 777-300ER, 777F and 777-200ER equipped with GE engines.[8] Name available upon request
April 7, 201313 yr According to GCMAP, the only places where ETOPS 330 really would be of influence, is during some flights from the US to Asia. And even then, we're talking about a rather small corridor. I'm thinking this is more of a marketing move than a real necessity. Name available upon request

Auckland to anywhere on the US east coast goes through a forbidden patch at ETOPS-207, as does SAEZ-FAJS for example, so for a couple of airlines it really could be important. John-Alan Pascoe
April 8, 201313 yr As Los Pilots said 207 is enough even for polar Ops. We operate B777 from KEWR to VHHH on polar and we use 180 ETOPS and we apply 4 ETOPS alternates, on the way back we may go even with three. As soon as we get to Canada airspace no need to have an ETOPS alternate bc there are plenty of adequate airports within 60 mins environment. If it is hard to find ETOPS alternate due to weather, curfews and stuff like that we may go 207, but this is rare, too much work for maintenance folks to do ETOPS pre- departure check. We got 787s and as soon as FAA approve it to bring them back to service we will go 207 and then 330 in the future. April 8, 201313 yr There's a spot between Australia's East coast and FAJS that goes out of 240min ETOPS. It's roughly centered around the French Kergluen Islands which prevents Twin ops from YSSY or YMML to FAJS via the great circle. Shifting far enough North to remain inside 240 ETOPS adds a good 2 hours to the flight time when westbound. April 8, 201313 yr Author too much work for maintenance folks to do ETOPS pre- departure check. Hi, would you mind explaining a little bit on what the extra work is required for them to do? Bryan Richards "People depend so much on automation that they forget how to get the automation to work." B.W.
April 8, 201313 yr Hi, would you mind explaining a little bit on what the extra work is required for them to do? Before we go on 207 we have to let them know way in advance. Let me ask them and I will tell you more as soon as I can. April 8, 201313 yr Author That would be great thanks, and i am wondering also if an airline is certified to operate their aircraft using ETOPS 330, do they usually operate under say the 180 minute rule and only operate under the 330 minute rule only if necessary seeing that the 330 rule requires more maintenance checks? For us at AA, the difference is primarily for deferred maintenance items. All ETOPS PDSC's (Pre Departure Service Checks) are done to the highest level, but whatever MEL items are on the plane determines if the plane can make the ETOPS trip or not. If we have an APU INOP, it knocks the plane down to 180 min. for us. (Yes, we can still fly ETOPS without an operable APU at AA, but only 180 min). Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
