X-Plane 10: Huuuuge performance problem with Geforce GTX 680

Featured Replies

Hi all,

just bought a new pc to replace my "old" laptop (MSI GT780DXR with i7 2670, 8GB Ram and GTX570M) with following config:

Intel i7-3770, 8 GB Ram, 256 GB SSD, Palit Geforce 680 GTX with 2GB VRam, Win7 64bit (Asrock Z77 Mainboard).

I thought that this system would rock X-Plane 10 (10.20) and there would be a great framerate...  -_-

Nothing! At all! It's even slower than my "old" laptop! High details, no HDR anitaliasing and ONLY 15-20fps at KSEA airport!!!

I installed the newest drivers for the graphiccard and everything is up-to-date.

What am I doing wrong?

Please help! I just love X-Plane 10!

Cheers,

Nasszelle

PS.: All other games are performing well, just X-Plane seems not to like my system.

I hope somebody can ring in here to help you.

It should be great performance with a 680.

I'm using a 670 and getting 60fps with HDR and 16 anti-a....most of the time.  I think around 30-40 fps at KSEA.

Sorry, I cant help as I dont have nvidia cards but dont worry, your machine should perform very well and I am guessing that there is an easy explanation.

I would say check your drivers etc given its a new rig but if other games are giving you good performance then I guess that is not an issue.

I would try turning off all anti aliasing,  as I forget the name of one of them but it can be a killer.    This would at least eliminate that as a possibility.

   What res are you running?

Thanks buddies for your posts. My resolution is 1920x1080.

Just read that everything in my post was already described by you in your OP.    Must read better in future!

This is a bit strange then, your resolution is obviously no issue, you are not triple screen.

Looks like you may have to go to basics and turn everything off and add one at a time to figure out what is giving you the issue.   A PITA I know.

With a machine like that it's impossible to have issues.  I run an i5-2500K with an HD7950, a 39" screen at 1980 * 1080 and I get 50-80 fps depending where I'm am, weather etc.  Hang in there someone  an nvidia card will chime in soon I'm sure.

I have the same problem with my 680 card which seems to be underperforming in 64-bit. Kind of weird.

I have one pc with a 660 non-ti and it never drops below 30fps with all settings maxed with water "off" and shadows set to low.  Tweak your pc or reinstall Windows plus drivers.

'Reinstall Windows', he says :-)

I know it could work, but it is such a major undertaking that one hesitates.

okay have you plugged your screen into the vid card slot? if you have not then you are operating on your generic card and are plugged into your mobo.

I see here that everyone is running from reinstalling windows!! I reinstall win7 once a month, it takes me 5 to 6 hours to have everything reinstalled!!!

For your question - Try reducing your cloud puffs to minimum this should give you a performance boost!

lol that card and system should propel him to mars let alone through some cloud puffs!

Yes, I know but he could try just to see the difference!

If you installed XP10 on the same drive as Win7 this is your problem, you should reinstall on another partition. If you have the partition with windows almost full, again this is your problem because Win7 transforms free space in virtual memory. If you had this PC and just upgraded some parts you should reinstall windows because drivers from old components don't mix well with the new one! You should consider OC your processor up to minimum 4GHZ.

Or one of your RAM module could be damage! I had 12GB of RAM and one of the modules broke, my FSX was running so bad (12FPS) and I didn't have any ideea what the problem is until I remove the RAM modules one by one and boom, 30FPS again!

Nasszelle, I'd also recommend what JasonHarris has said.

Turn all settings off or down to their lowest level, and then incrementally bring some back up to see how things perform. You should happen upon the settings which cause the problem.  If everything (everything!) is turned down or off, and you still get poor performance, then I'd start raising the red flag of system issues.

For what it's worth, I'm running with a Win7 x64 w/16GB, i7-3820 and a GTX 670 with no performance issues whatsoever. I do not run everything up on high, though.

If you installed XP10 on the same drive as Win7 this is your problem, you should reinstall on another partition.

I respectfully disagree in this case. He's using an SSD, not a traditional drive. SSD's have zero seek time penalties, unlike traditional drives which need to move a read/write head around to get data. This makes them perfectly acceptable for having both the OS and games installed on them if the space allows for it. In addition, frame rates are very rarely affected by hard drive speeds. Loading times may be affected, but once you're in the game the frame rates rest almost entirely on the shoulders of the CPU and GPU.

Yes, I know but he could try just to see the difference!

If you installed XP10 on the same drive as Win7 this is your problem, you should reinstall on another partition.

Even if he had a traditional drive you could not categorically say that this is the reason for the graphics slowdown,  I couldnt even think how this could be the case.    The only time he could have issues are perhaps stutters when needing to load new scenery, certainly not right after the initial loading when being dropped in to the cockpit.
