April 18, 201313 yr Hi all Question on Win7 if i may. My computer came with Win7 64bit preinstalled when i bought it a while back. If and when i upgrade to a newer computer should i buy a boxed version now (whilst its still available) so i can continue to use Win7 64bit as i don't think i want to use Win8. Just in case i can't get retailer to install Win7 as all new computers seem to come with Win8? I like using Win7 and it might be handy to have a back up for existing computer as well if i don't use it in the future. Will Microsoft shut the lid on it anytime soon which i doubt as XP is still going? What do you Guy's think? Kind Regards Simon.
April 18, 201313 yr You can pick up system builder editions rather cheaply if you look around... XP will no longer be supported as of April 2014. The current support level in Windows 7 is currently planned until some time in 2015, with the extended support (security patches but no new features) perhaps lasting until 2020. my guess is that Windows Post 8, whatever it may be called, Windows 9 maybe should be out by then. Hopefully, Microsoft might have learned the lesson that desktop and tablet systems require completely separate OS environments... A Andrew Entwistle
April 18, 201313 yr Go for Windows 7 8 is an abomination :girl_devil: Jude BradleyBeech Baron: Uh, Tower, verify you want me to taxi in front of the 747?ATC: Yeah, it's OK. He's not hungry. X-Plane 12 and MSFS2020 🙂 System specs: Windows 11 Pro 64-bit, Ubuntu Linux 20.04 i7-13700KF Gigabyte Z790 RTX-4060-Ti , 32GB RAM 1X 2TB M2 for X-Plane 12, 1x256GB SSD for OS. 1TB drive MSFS2020
April 18, 201313 yr The way I see it is: Windows 8 is purely developed for the Tablet market and that's where it should remain. I know there are people using it on PC's with mixed results. If you're an even moderate PC user you would probably have at least 2 drives. Well, that's well and good unless you want a dual boot system. Which I do The post F8 for the boot menu is gone. Mebbe there's another way to do it but I'm not aware. Win7 Pro 64 bit is the way I'd go. There are myriad other things that really don't suit it to the PC. I've read posts where FSX and Win8 don't play nice, sometimes. Jon
April 18, 201313 yr Did you need to go for Vista, with XP still around? IMO, stick to W7 until the addon developers (like PMDG) state otherwise. What happened to AVSIM
April 18, 201313 yr I think Windows 7-64 will be the "go to" system for the rest of FSX's existence. April 19, 201313 yr Author Cheers for the replies Guy's. You all echo my thoughts on this. Win8 may be acceptable on tablets (Never used it on these) but for desktop i love Win7 64 and know it quite well now too. FSX is nice and stable for me using this OS. I think i will purchase a copy of Win7 64 from my local store while they have stock. : ) Kind Regards Simon.
