What do you look for in an ext model?

Featured Replies

I make videos which I stick on youtube quite often, so I like an external model which looks roughly like the aircraft in question... right proportions, animations etc.

All of PMDG's products are great in this regard from the FS2002 737NG on up. Having an external model helps with heavily edited videos because you can use the 'different view point' as a time compression technique. ie 1, 2, 3, 4, (change views) 32, 33, 34 (change views) 86, 87, 88. The change of view to skip multiple minutes is a lot less jarring on the viewer than a skip from the same viewpoint.

The VC is more important (and harder imo) to get right though, and that's where PMDG really excell. The LDS767 has a good external model, great 2D cockpit and the simulation of systems is brilliant, but the VC is flat looking, the FMS doesn't work directly in the VC (it's a 2d popup with a static image in the VC), and there are few true 3d animations in the VC.

This is the reason I havn't done videos about it and have actually gone so far as to retire it from my fleet (after having it/PIC767 for near enough on 10 years). If I had to choose between a good external and good virtual cockpit mode, I'd go with the cockpit every time. Fortunatley we don't have to choose between a good cockpit and a good external model, we can get PMDG products that have both.

PMDG to me is a perfectionist of a company which would want everything to go as best as it's FSXly possible. Not sure what PMDG thinks about this. (To cover my backside, I didn't intend for the discussion to evolve into this, I only wanted to see how people considered one to be a nice model).

it might seem like an off topic comparison, and some might say you can't compare the two, but I consider PMDG to be the Apple of Flight Simulators/FSX.

They produce top quality products. Ofcourse there are other devs out there with somewhat the same functionality's, but PMDG are the ones who keep bringing me back for more...
