What do you look for in an ext model?

Absolutely everything in this photo...

I don't know...

I'm only counting 54 spokes on the wheels, and they're supposed to be 60 spoke wheels.

See?  Here's the proof from Airliners.Photography.Frat.org:

[Yes, I know the images are not showing up - it's a joke.  Don't be a derp.]

95% of the time I'm in the VC but its nice having a well made model for screenshots.

Hmm, if there is quite big ( i suppose ) group of customers who do not care so much about external model, maybe PMDG team will consider to release their planes as two versions, with or without external model ?

PMDG workload will be much less, production time as well, maybe price also

PMDG to me is a perfectionist of a company which would want everything to go as best as it's FSXly possible.  Not sure what PMDG thinks about this.  (To cover my backside, I didn't intend for the discussion to evolve into this, I only wanted to see how people considered one to be a nice model).

Learning to use and getting use to FSX!

Brendan, why not to discuss about it?

Releasing plane without external model would be something really new and fresh in FSX world.

Finally professional sims do not have "external model".

If team would spent time they are spending for external model making for deeper system modeling, then i sign by my both hands under this idea.

I wish to know PMDG opinion about it ?

Considering the amount of systsm detail PMDG already put in any given product, is it possible to take things further?

Quoting RSR from another thread:

Yes!  In a nutshell- it is telling you to stay out of the gear bay...  Yes, we actually modeled the light functionality and operation.

There is a process you have to take the gear system through if you have the gear extended by alternate method and then you wish to return it to normal operation...  We modeled that too...

Ryan, there is always room for make things better....

That is true, but will you actually see those improvements in the sim? I for one know that I'll probably never experience all the system failure posibilities/combinations programmed into the 777.

i saw this topic and had to respond.

no matter how much time i spend in the cockpit which is about 99% of the time i want the exterior model to be as good as it can for the reason that it does affect on the realism.

for instance those of you who said they would be satisfied with the cockpit box only, do you seriously think that it would be fine to click S on your keyboard and see nothing?

no matter how much time you'll spend in the cockpit, the exterior model make the T7 what it is, without it, it is an empty aircraft.

Nothing. I would be happy to buy aircraft without external model as long as cockpit, systems and aircraft behavior is top quality.

Can you remember a time when the external model in MSFS didn't have see-through cockpit windows, no moving surfaces and there was no landing gear motion. It went from up to down instantly with no animation whatsoever.

Thanks - I needed a little levity...

Yep I sure do :) I remember having a play with aircraft factory (I think) for FS5.1 and trying to make a 777. I wanted to add so many features that are now only possible, it's amazing how far we have come in this hobby!

Alaister Kay

Hi, everyone,

I spend most of my time flying in the VC like many others. But I find the external, visual model view to be essential for several reasons.

First, it is extremely helpful in replaying takeoffs and landings. The poor, all-or-nothing FSX crash detection is useless for figuring out why a takeoff or landing went wrong.  I have it turned off. And for improving OK but not excellent takeoffs, landings and other phases of flight, the external view is essential as well.  I have to wonder whether such a feature wouldn't be useful even for professional pilots using simulators.  The NTSB often provides animated external view illustrations as part of its accident reports.

Second, I don't see how we could become familiar with systems in action without the external view, such as the flaperon action Capt. Randazzo illustrated in another thread.  Certainly such actions would be hard or impossible to detect by just watching the instruments.   I don't know if failures observable by a pre-flight walk around will be simulated (and, PMDG, p-l-e-a-s-e don't delay the release for such a feature) but it's still amazing to do a virtual walk-around before flight, and see the gear, gear-bay, and engines up close.

Third, even though it is not realistic to be able to observe one's own aircraft in flight, for me it is still a big part of the immersion experience.  Especially on long flights, I love to watch the aircraft in flight.  I also love to replay takeoffs and landings.  The better the visual model and the better the livery, the more realistic the weather, the happier I am, just so long as my framerates stay reasonable!

It looks to me like the upcoming T7 will really "have it all!"

Mike
