Basic questions from a potential new user

Featured Replies

Hi

I am one of long-time FSX users who is close to become a convert. Five months ago I installed Win 8 on a new SSD and reinstalled all my software except – FSX. I simply can't find time and energy for one-week adventure of installing, tweaking, testing etc. I have been away for enough time that I can't even figure out how to use search on this forum so I will take the liberty to ask few simple questions even if they have been answered before:

Are Saitek Pro Flight yoke/pedals supported? Does it suffer from the dreadful disappearing joystick bug in Win8 like FSX?

Please open Specs of my PC on the left.  :blush2: Yes, I know, it sucks, it's 4 years old. Do you think however the performance and scenery details would show at least on the level of default FSX?

Demo: is it always current or do I have to upgrade after installing?

Thank you. I’ll soon dive deeper in this forum and avoid recurring questions.

Daniel S.

Hi Daniel,  your yoke/rudders will work fine.  I cant say about the win8 bug, Idont have win 8.

You should get better performance than you do for FSX on whatever hardware you are running.   I am not sure if the demo is always completely up to date with current.

The nice thing is that its pretty painless to do the update.  Your demo will have an updater in the install directory.  Just run it an it will prompt you to check for updates and download/install.  It does it for you.

i'm on win8 64bit....all is good, no bugs.

Yes to Saitek, and theoretically yes to the bug. The Win8 joystick issue is not exclusive to MSFS, but any game running on Win8 that uses a stick. That said, I run both FSX and XP10 on Win8 x64 and have yet to have my yoke and rudder pedals drop out. If you've experienced the drop outs before, you likely will continue to have them no matter what program you use with the joystick, or what joystick brand you use.

XP10 is of a newer generation than FSX. For significantly older systems, performance does suffer when scenery is brought to a comparable level to a previous MSFS install. For moderate systems like yours, I think you'll be equivalent if not better. Very modern systems will run like a champ - but JUST like MSFS, don't expect to max out "all the sliders" on even today's best computer and get good performance. Like all other well-designed games, X-Plane does have some growing room for future tech.

My strongest recommendation is to use the demo demo demo!

I can't stress the demonstration enough. Free, not too big, and yes - I believe you will be downloading the current active version. I think you can even participate in the betas with the demo as well, should one be active when you try it. It will let you see first hand the performance you should expect from the full version. It might not give you enough flight time to evaluate if the Win8 bug will affect you, but you can get a sense for what X-Plane is and get your expectations established for the full version with the demo.

Thank you all.

One more question before downloading demo: What is the quality of the planes, both default and payware? On the scale 1-10 if you give a 10 to top fsx planes (PMDG, Majestic), how would you rate best x-planes? Somewhere around 5-6 or even more?

I would be satisfied with one decent GA and one Heavy. I'am not one of those having 30 birds in hangar and hardly ever flying most of them. I like to go deeper into the systems and flying techniques (if I bite into this I have a feeling I will sorely miss NGX and similar quality planes - or am I wrong?).

So you sound like me then! For the heavy I would say the Ramzess & Philip 777 which is my plane of choice in x-plane.

For smaller, maybe the CRJ-200 which I do not own, but have read lots of postitives abount.

Ask if you have any more questions.

Actually there are some high quality planes in X-Plane, some of them VERY close to top FSX ones. If you are into systems:

- B777 (the one mentioned in previous post by Ramzzess&Phillip). They are about to release their B757 which is supposed to be even better in June.

- CRJ200 which is just an excellent plane

- Jetstream JS31 which I consider one of the best planes for ANY sim.

Somewhere around 5-6 or even more

Some yes, but there are a few out there that WILL get a definite 10.

I will speak out for the one's I have:

Javier Rollon: Jetstream 32 available in both 32/64 bit

http://www.x-aviation.com/catalog/jetstream-p-92.html?osCsid=170b5330f4c5cb3565355131f7321ab6

Carenado's: A36 Bonanza, Grand Caravan HD Series, PA32R Saratoga. 32bit (64bit versions are being updated)

http://www.carenado.com/CarSite/Portal/index.php?accion=categories

X-Aviation's: MU2 (32bit only)

http://www.x-aviation.com/catalog/mitsubishi-marquise-p-29.html

All of these are great aircraft with outstanding work done by the Dev's. I'm sure there are a lot more out there that deserve a 10.

Windows 11 - Samsung 990 Pro M.2 | Asus Prime Z690 | i7 12700KF HT | DeepCool LS520 SE | MSI 5070 Ti Ventus OC | 64GB G.Skill XMP II | Lian Li 216 LANCOOL RGB | TrackIr v5 | Honeycomb Alfa - Bravo - Charlie | MSFS 2024 - Samsung 990 Pro M.2 | Curved 27" MSI | JBL Quantum 810

GA....definitely Carenado...their latest offering, the Cessna 210M is X-Plane 10, 64 bits ready. 4Forces is working on it's Cessna 152, redoing the model and all, to be compatible with XPX.
Heavy...the 777 or the JARDesign A320. The JAR 320 will only work in 32 bits at the moment, until Laminar fix the code causing SASL to crash. Should be fixed by 10.30.

There are some really interesting projects in the wings at the moment. The most anticipated of them all is the IXEG 737, this aircraft will probably redefine flight simulation on this platform. Due out in the fall or thereabouts. Leading Edge Simulations is nearly ready to release it's Saab 340 which looks amazing. R&P are getting the final touches on their 757 mentioned earlier and it looks gorgeous. Things look bright for X-Plane at this moment in time.

Yes - it's like a few years ago (maybe more?) when in FSX it just seemed to be a new aircraft would come to market every few months. Same is happening now in x-plane.

You mention the 73 and 75 above - these aircraft alone and much like I did when the Ramzzess 777 came out are reasons for people to try x-plane.

I'm enjoying flying both sims, back in the NGX to explore some different parts of the world.

PMDG is creating an aircraft also for xp10.  This release will certainly gain more buyers :clapping:  :yahoo:  :drinks:

the IXEG 737 and Ramzzess 757 will be the ULTIMATE XP10 RELEASES in 2013 matching or surpassing PMDG QUALITY.

Thank you, I have a much clearer perspective now. Looks really promissing. Downloading demo...
