May 14, 201313 yr Turbo mode is fine, it should be on. It's okay to trust it. My overclock is 100% stable. Great temps.

May 14, 201313 yr Utter nonsense. Sorry to offend. I have an 17 3770k running at 4.5GHz. It's cooled by an air cooler. A Noctua HH-D14 to be precise. temps under load, in Prime are in the 60's. In FSX the temps are around 55. I'm sorry, I disagree. Of course, it's your choice to buy whatever cooling sys. you like. May 14, 201313 yr Not sure how you can disagree to be honest. The statement you made, namely "air cooling is pretty much obsolete these days" is simply wrong. Just look at the various cooler reviews. You can see with one glance how well the NH-D14 performs. Plenty of other air coolers out there doing just fine as well. The OP's Arctic 13 for example does very nicely in reviews. Air coolers can hardly be obsolete when large numbers of them are sold for high end PC's. It's true that all-in-one water coolers are also becoming popular, but they aren't proper water cooling kits and could never be compared with such.

NH-D14 is one big brick, I do not know exact dimensions (160x160x160 or so?), but it looks like CFM-56 inside case, I would never put that cooler in my PC instead of water block. And that's just one for CPU, add custom air cooler for GPU, chipset air cooler (passive maybe?), HDD air cooler, and there is no space for proper airflow through that crowded case anymore. Btw, there are pretty decent all-in-one and semi-custom water cooling systems these days, of course not that good as full custom ones. And all in one are really compact, you can place it in almost any case, while that NH-D14 cannot fit in even a medium sized case. May 14, 201313 yr And that's where the taste comes in mind. I find it pretty sexy to have an CFM-56 on the CPU. :-) But the costs for a good water cooling are a bit expensive. Also I'm one of the lazy ones and wanted to avoid these tricky and time consuming installations on CPU and GPU. (No, my taste of women is different). Kind regards, Stefan Sondermann
May 14, 201313 yr Author My off-set voltage is 0.030. Which gives me 1.304 under full load. Your voltage seems to be lower than mine, so that's not your problem. The Arctic 13 should be about 10 degrees warmer than my NH-D14 under full load. So I would have thought you would see quite reasonable temps. The Cooler not mounted properly would seem to be the most likely scenario. I'd gladly send you my overclock settings if you like? Turbo mode should be enabled, that is not an issue. Thanks for your response Martin (and others who replied). Yes would be interested to see your settings assuming you have the same mobo. You could e-mail them to me at iainsmithDOTrugbyATbtinternetDOTcom Regarding re-seating the cooler, my son-in-law installed the already assembled board for me and I'm pretty sure he's installed CPUs and coolers before so I'll have a word with him. Iain Easy enough to check... If you give a little tug on the cooler with the system off and there is any play then there is an issue. It should be super snug, almost feel like it is vacuumed to the CPU. If you can twist it or tug it then it should be cleaned/reseated. Also, when the system is on give a quick peek inside to make sure all of the fans are actually spinning! Had that happen to an old E8500... Paul Have a Wonderful Day -Paul Solk

I have checked the fans and all, including the CPU fan, are running. Iain

And all in one are really compact, you can place it in almost any case, while that NH-D14 cannot fit in even a medium sized case. Not the point though. Your original statement, the one I complained about, was... "air cooling is obsolete". Again, this is utterly incorrect. Now, you are changing the subject matter to the NH-D14's size. Yes, it is big, very big, precisely why it's such an awesome cooler. Enclosure size has to be ample enough. Therefore it's not the right solution for everyone. I never said it was. I only complained about your "air cooling is obsolete" statement. Your graphics card custom air cooler is nowhere near the Noctua, it would be beneath the graphics card, facing down in your case. HDD air coolers are totally unnecessary, hard drives don't reach temperatures that are excessive. Simply having the traditional fan at the front of the case, blowing across the hard drive into the case is sufficient. Air flow though the case is NOT an issue, and never has been since the Noctua came to market. I have an infrared thermometer, all temps at various locations of my case are well within guidelines. You are simply coming up with excuses to deride the D14, based on zero experience with the product. The beauty of the NH-D14, is that the centrally mounted 140mm fan, overlaps the cooler, and directs a prodigious amount of cool air across the motherboard. Excellent component coolingHanging out at the bottom of the fin-stacks, the NF-P14 fan doesn’t only contribute to the NH-D14’s superb CPU cooling capabilities but also provides massive airflow over surrounding motherboard components and heatsinks, thus ensuring excellent component cooling performance. http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=34&lng=en You see, Noctua aren't stupid. Their engineers have designed the cooler to work, and work well, while taking into consideration aspects like motherboard cooling. But I agree, the huge Noctua is not for everyone. If you have a small enclosure, tall RAM, or simply prefer the aesthetics of an all-in-one water solution, then fine, that's probably the best choice for you. It's worth bearing in mind though, that the NH-D14 is super quiet, and the all-in-one solutions not so quiet. while that NH-D14 cannot fit in even a medium sized case. Again, you have zero knowledge of the D14. I have a Lian Li P50. It's a mid tower case. Very small by todays standards. Thanks for your response Martin (and others who replied).
