February 3, 201412 yr LOL - makes it even more interesting and quirky! Bill Hehe yes, initially I thought the MF pressure gauge would be imperial to, because this is something not real pilot would do (use different units on a cockpit sticky than on the gauge) - you want to keep things simple and straightforward if possible. So when it said 745" HG I put 7.45 on the MF gauge. The Antonov still flies and even takes off nicely like that, but it does get awfully slow ;-)
February 4, 201412 yr To get the engine on fire, you must foolishly forget to open the cowl flaps. Especially on the ground where the air doesn't help cooling the engine as efficiently. Btw, if anyone wants to go online (casual hamachi session, not vatsim/ivao) with this aircraft, shoot me a PM.
February 5, 201412 yr If you've bought the Antonov, you might also like... ... the ClassicsHangar Messerschmitt Bf-108 Taifun, which is on sale at SimMarket this week (40% off). I think it is a very nice model too, and for that price it's actually a must-have for anyone into the classics. Kind of like the little nimble and faster nephew of the An-2, from a remote part of the family ;-) Be sure to get the sound mod from flightsim.com, brings the plane to life even more.
February 6, 201412 yr Either that (check the temperature gauges, anything below 215°C should be fine), or the engine is fouling up (mixture too rich) when idling on approach - dunno whether that's modelled or not, though. Either case: ideally you plan your approach so that you don't have to put the engine at idle, but can keep it running with some power. I think I am starting to master this now with no further smokey approaches! Clearly approaching with the engine fully throttled back is not too wise (although difficult not to do it as this thing has many of the characteristics of a powered glider!). The vital part, as you say, is to keep a regular check on the cylinder head temperature gauge and make frequent use of the cowl flaps switch to keep the engine cooled (I am not yet sure what the oil shutter switch does but I assume it might have something to do with cooling the oil or have I got that completely wrong?). That CHT gauge certainly needs to be monitored closely after any change in power settings and I suspect also while the engine is running when stationary or taxiing for any significant period of time or while flying at low airspeeds. Bill
February 6, 201412 yr It is a measure of the quality of this model that the oil shutter is animated, even though it is very hard to see. As you can see, it allows or restricts the flow of air through the oil cooler on the bottom of the engine cowling. Closed Open I believe that at this stage, whether the oil shutter is open or closed has no effect in FSX as there is no oil shutter function built in but that this will be included in the update which will happen but there is no forecast date. Regards, Nick
February 6, 201412 yr Thanks for clarifying that Nick. At least until the update appears that is one less switch that I have to flick! Bill
