June 19, 201312 yr Do you need to restart NI, FSX or your computer when you try to change something in NI ? I am messing around with various options to try and elminiate shimmering and/or jagged lines on the runways (the only place I really have awful visuals) and nothing seems to be happening so I am guessing I am doing something wrong here. June 19, 201312 yr Top- right corner, Mark - "Apply changes", after making sure that you do have the right profile - MS Flight Simulator X selected. As Rendi pointed out - this will take effect on the next FSX re-start. June 19, 201312 yr Author Thanks Paul. I was doing it correctly in NI, just needed to restart FSX. After further work I have realized that the shimmering runway markings seem to only happen at the default airports. Any add on airports I have tried are looking good. I have REX so perhaps should look at my texture settings for runways. Mark CYYZ

You could try the 8 X Multisampling en 8 X SGSS options. For me that works the best, but for safety reasons i have switched back to 4 MS / 4 X SGSS because I think i noticed a slight decrease in performance. With any of those be sure to add the lines: MultiSamplesPerPixel=4 (put 8 here when planning to use 8 X SGSS) MultiSampleQuality=8 under de [Graphics] section in your fsx.CFG. Also set the Texture Filtering - Negative LOD Bias to CLAMP in NI. There are tons of topics about NI settings and in every thread you will read something else, so you'll have to try and test various settings for yourself. Good luck, and please report your findings as I am always interested in different experiences. Mark

I guess I need to remind everyone of my post late last year where I advised everyone that AA/AF have to be set within FSX for DX10 and you cannot use your external NI settings for DX10 Preview. There was quite a discussion about that last year and nothing has changed - http://forum.avsim.net/topic/386148-only-fsx-aaaf-settings-work-in-dx10-preview/. I know there are still many non-believers but putting my NI settings in the default for FSX and setting AA/AF in the program is the best graphics for me in DX10 Preview. Absolutely nothing else works. Best regards, Jim Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource! June 19, 201312 yr Author Tried the NI default with AA & AF set in FSX as well as the setting Mork has suggested above. From what I can see the Mork settings look much better so I will stick with those. Mark CYYZ

Best regards, Jim That's odd, I have AA on, filtering set to Tri-linear in the sim, then I have the .cfg lines added as mentioned above (the MultiSamplesPerPixel=4 and MultiSampleQuality=8 as per the stickied guide), and have set 4xS AA, 4xSGSS, and 16 aniso in NI. I'm not 100% sure that 4xS is actually working and maybe I'm just getting in sim 4x multisampling as per those .cfg lines, however the SGSS for transparency AA as set in NI is for SURE working (I have zero VC shimmering vs. not having SGSS on) and so is aniso. June 22, 201312 yr It all works best for me in default. I provided the link and the information and can only say that you are probably getting a placebo effect. It does not work in DX10 except, as my links provide, some ni settings may work with the multisamplesperpixel and multisamplequality entries in the fsx.cfg but those entries are known frame rate killers. June 22, 201312 yr I must confess I have never tried the sim with the default NI FSX settings, Jim! I will do so, and report back. Thanks for the info! Best regards, Jim Yep the SGSS is working with multisampleperpixel at 4. At 2 and trying to get 2xSGSS to work there was massive aliasing in the aircraft textures and shimmering in the VC. Setting the cfg file to 4 and NI to 4xSGSS resulted in very smooth textures and no shimmering in VC at all. I will see about setting my 4xS setting to app controlled though then since as you said it's likely it's not being used. I'm definitely sure external anisotropic filtering is working though, but will double check that I'm not seeing things. Am I looking in the wrong place? Am I just confused (as is the norm)? Dennis Trawick Screen Shot Forum Rules
