July 21, 201312 yr Speed is a factor of both RAM Speed and Latency. Higher MHz RAM @ CL 10 can beat Slightly lower MHz RAM @ CL 9. I'm having my system built for me, so my system memory selection is pretty limited (unless I'm willing to pay a premium for a special order). Plus my build includes a Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler, so that pretty much limits my choices to low-profile memory sticks. My choice was between 2133MHz CL-10 RAM, or 1866MHz CL-9 RAM, and the 2133MHz one is the faster [10/2133*2000=9.37] [9/1866*2000=9.65]. From what I have read, the sweet spot which had been 1600Mhz CL-9 (9/1600*2000=11.25) for the past few years, has increase a bit as CPUs have increase a bit. Some now are suggesting that the new sweet spot is perhaps 1866MHz CL-9 RAM. Anything faster than that would not likely be worth the extra cost, due to the small benefit you might gain in performance. [Two 8GB sticks of 2133MHz CL-10 RAM only costs me $10 more than two 8GB sticks of 866MHz CL-9 RAM.] You are absolutely correct Arwen. CL10 RAM can have lower latency then CL9 RAM.This is how RAM speeds and latency change performance in FSX: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/412163-the-impact-of-different-ram-speeds-and-timings-in-fsx/#entry2701806
July 22, 201312 yr $145: TridentX DDR3-2400 10-12-12 4x4 GB – Not Recommended" I beg to differ. FSX benefits from the fastest RAM possible and this has been proven time and time again. 2400Mhz or above is the way to go if you can afford it and are on Ivy or Haswell, mind you I would tend to stick to just using (2x4GB) or (2x8GB) as opposed to 4 modules. I was previously running 2133Mhz on Sandybridge and the jump in FSX performance from 1600Mhz on that system was noticable. -Anthony Young- "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return." - Leonardo da Vinci
July 22, 201312 yr Author Commercial Member Yes go for the 9's IMO. At the same time a certain build may show the same performance with slower RAM. Cheers jja Jim Allen[email protected]SkyPilot Software home of FSXAssist / P3DAssist
July 23, 201312 yr IMHO having benched huge FSX instaltions on multiple systems for years I just will chime in with the following: Save your money, spend it on the CPU and Video card and a decent MB if you are going to O/C. After 1600 CL9 the "performance" return is so incredably diminished that if you think you are seeing better performance you need to look somewhere else. No ifs or but... FSX+ 3DS Max, CS5.5 4790K @ 4.8K Asrock Xt3 - 16GB 1866 CL-9 - NV 1070 GTX - 240GB Intel SSD - 2TB Barracuda - Win10-64 Near Silent Noctua D-14 3-Fans - Two - NFA-15cm and - One NFA-14cm All @ 700 rpm - Bitfenix Shinobi Case - (Non Delided CPU)
July 23, 201312 yr No disrespect but have you seen the Fsxmark11 thread/results or any of the many posts by westman or techguymax? As far as fsx goes ram speed does matter and will make a difference to performance. From memory going from 1600MHz to 2133Mhz gave me an extra 3fps on average and also made things feel a lot smoother. YMMV. For the small price premium I think it's worth it. As far as other games go though, I agree ram speed doesn't have as much impact there. -Anthony Young- "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return." - Leonardo da Vinci

But to say as slow as FSX is rendered that Ram is holding it back? Those 1% increases over 40FPS OK I wont argue that at the price of Ram these days getting faster ram is unwise, nor will I dispute the great effort and hard work of others so I probably should have chosen the words more carefully. I'm just saying, better to invest in CPU/Video if there is room. July 25, 201312 yr No problems, not saying there was anything wrong with your opinion at all. Just saying that if someone is looking for the best FSX performance possible they need to be aware that for FSX RAM speed is relevant. I totally agree with you that CPU and GPU will make more of a difference though. -Anthony Young- "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return." - Leonardo da Vinci
