Testing DX10 without the fixes?

Featured Replies

I was thinking about giving DX10 another try. When reading through the pdf with instructions it occured to me to simply test if DX10 will be smoother on my PC, I do not really need to install the new shaders etc., right...? I mean, the fixes are all FIXES and don't have anything to do with PERFORMANCE, so it seems to me! So before I install a new shader folder I was wondering if testing DX10 just by turning it on (and applying a few tweaks for FSAA) would be good enough to tell me if installing the new shaders is worth it...?

Never mind: I installed the fixes anyway, just to be sure: it wasn't too much work. Luckily I decided to first make a copy of all the folders (in the same location) that would be influenced because after testing it a while, I was quickly back to DX9 (for now) by simply renaming the folders (so I can just as quickly enable DX10 again if I want to). First of all because I couldn't really notice a difference (although the water looked different, which proved DX10 was working ;) and perhaps it was a little bit smoother, but not really obvious) but what completely spoiled it all was a MEGA stutter every minute or so where my screen would pause for a second or so. Totally killing. So until someone can tell me what may cause that I am back to DX9. ;)

The modification of the General folder with Steve's DX10 Fix does not touch any DX9 files or folders.  Only DX10 stuff (that's why only the General10 folder is changed - 10 being for DX10).  This is why you can go from DX9 to DX10 and back to DX9 whenever you desire with SP2/Acceleration installed.  Microsoft Aces Team made it that way.  When it first appeared, there were several anomalies with DX10 but everyone got better FPS.  I left DX10 as I hated the flickering runways and the fact you could not use the ATC Taxi function normally.  But Steve has changed all of that with his simple fixes so far and I heard more fixes are on the horizon.  So you can employ Steve's DX10 Fix and not worry about uninstalling it as it will not harm your DX9 files and folders whatsoever.  You just have to untick the DX10 Preview box, shutdown FSX, and restart it and you are back to DX9.  DX10 provides better immersion in FSX with sun shadows in the VC's and water that gets nastier depending on the weather and a few other minor things.  It's a better technology than DX9 but unfortunately the Microsoft Team did not have the opportunity to further develop the DX10 engine.  If they were still around we would probably be able to use DX11 technology that our modern video cards are capable of providing gamers.

Best regards,

Jim

yeah all you had to do to go back to directx9 was actually turn off DirectX 10 preview and everything would be exactly how you left it.

I never had any of those pause every minute or so that you're talking about never saw them not even once so I'm not sure why that's happening to you.

did you run his installer?

to uninstall his patch all you actually would have had to do was renamed one file. it's explained very very simply in the read me.

I knew how to get back to DX9 easily but just wanted to be sure... I rather backup a little too much than a little too little: better safe then sorry! ;) I also like to have a clean system so even when I can go back to DX9 easily by just turning off DX10 preview, I like to be able to get rid of those DX10 fixes COMPLETELY and I can do so by backing up the folders and renaming them. Besides, I also had to make changes to FSX.cfg and the ingame settings were also changed a little... By simply renaming the various affected folders I solved that easily. And lets not forget the altered nVidia Inspector settings... All in all there's certainly more to it then simply turning off DX10 in FSX. ;)

I used the installer, yes. I have no idea what causes that pause but it's quite consistent. Whenever I enable DX10 I get HUGE pauses every now and then which I don't get with DX9. DX9 may (maybe/perhaps/so it seems etc.) have some more tiny micro stutters but I'm still not sure so all in all I am back to DX9 for now.

I don't know about any big pauses, sounds weird. You could try to start with a fresh fsx.cfg to get rid of old tweaks from DX9.

Micro-stutters can be caused by core parking, Jeroen - also - what do you have FTFF set to?

Do you have EZCA installed?

Can you you attach a copy of your fsx.cfg (renamed as fsx.txt) so we can see what it looks like?

what is this core parking you speak of?

Hi Charles: Here you go.

I already have core parking disabled but not using that registry edit: I will give that a try too. FTFF is set to 0.22 because I am quite touchy when it comes to late loading textures so lower settings I don't like. ;)

No, not EZCA but I do use OpusFSX.

Adding the cfg isn't of much use because I only use the adviced tweaks so everything else is default. I will create a new cfg though, just to test.

Guys, about core parking, ....go to control panel > power option > set to High performance and "voila" you will be fine and you won't need to edit anything....

Other than I only use VRS TacPack on FSX these days (and VRS says not to use DX10 preview), every time I tried the DX10 preview mode before (with the fixes), the image quality only improved slightly and my FPS went from a solid 30 to a wobbly 10 to 12. In my case a fresh fsx.cfg file might have helped, but it's really not worth the effort. I don't think my hardware is the cause.

and this ladies and gentlemen is why I never even saw what core parking was cause I've always run all my equipment at high performance power management settings.

thank you for the education. this is something I actually didn't know. :)
