777 EFIS question (Picture inside)

Is that the strange star into Dubai? I've ran into that on my first flight from Doha and lets just say that little hop lasted a bit longer than it should have........

The long trombone section is for ATC sequencing purposes. Once they have achieve the correct spacing between you and the preceding aircraft, they will clear you direct to an appropriate point (e.g. one of the points on extended final).

If you are flying by yourself, you should definitely cut the STAR as soon as you can because the rest of it is a waste of time.

You will notice that on most of these STARs, there is an "at or below" restriction - this is to ensure that you won't be hugely high on profile when ATC give you the shortcut.

Yeah don't worry I didn't and never fly that thing fully. I let VNAV take us left - then HDG SEL for a quick vector. Clean speed was 228knts - so she descended really nice on approach (-;

How about this?

Kyle, quick question on that feature. After you have put the offest into the FMC, does LNAV automatically fly the offset route, or is it just there as a guidline(eg. if you ask for up to 10nm right of track for WX, so you don't go further off course) and you have flown over to it using HDG SEL?

Sorry for answering your question Kyle, however I assume your asleep over in your neck of the woods.

Ryan, according to the Honeywell FMS manual, once the offset is entered into the FMC and executed, the LNAV mode turns the aircraft to leave the original path and capture the offset route.

OK, thanks for the answer James.

I seem to remember that on the ACA YVR-SYD DVD, they put in a dotted "offset" line, so they wouldn't accidentally go further than 20nm L & R of track, while deviating around some weather. They then used HDG to fly around the wx and rejoined the route on the other side.

I assume this is simulated as well, but it's obvious now that they are 2 different features.

They may have just entered the offset and not executed it. This would of resulted in the offset dashed line being white.

I have the DVD laying around, I will have a gander and see if they do what I suspect they did.

Haha - so, I'm not gonna lie, the only reason I know what time it is down there is that I tweeted at an actress from down there last night.  She responded at 0400ish my time and I got curious as to what time it was over there.

Sad I know...whatever.
