August 28, 201312 yr Indeed, heard a similar comment from an FAA official, nicotine stains were great for finding fatigue cracks. Time to remind everyone that nicotine is colourless and odourless. Any brown stains are from tar residue not nicotine. August 28, 201312 yr Not quite. It was discovered that the smoke from smokers was discolouring the insulation and adding a layer of soot ti the bulkheads. It was feared that this would add to corrosion. I have seen a DC9 gutted for conversion to freighter and we could definitely tell people smoked in it, it was disgusting. Back in the sixties I worked for what was locally called "Mucky Duck Airways" more properly known as McRobertson Miller Airlines operating out of Perth, WA. One of the first jobs I had to do was to fit grills over the cabin air exhaust ducts at the tail pipe of our F27s. Why, to stop birds building nests in the exhaust ducts and effectively nobbling the cabin air conditioning and pressurisation system. The next job I had was to fit baton and handcuff holders behind the first officers seat (needed to subdue unruly miners from the NW travelling to Perth on holiday). The all female cabin attendants used to get a hard time from these revellers. Heady days indeed. August 29, 201312 yr Commercial Member Smoking anywhere is almost a criminal offence these days. I miss the days when I could smoke in the bar, club, concert venue ........... Although I do smoke I really don't miss smoking in bars, out here in Bahrain all the clubs & bars are smoking and its disgusting when you compare it to the pubs and bars back in the UK. Although concerts is another thing, it is annoying having to leave the venue if you want a smoke. Rob Prest
