Windows 8.1 RTM is out in the wild!

Featured Replies

Did any body try the final bits of 8.1 RTM with FSX?

does it have the same problems of Win 8.1 Preview with FSX?

As one of the people using Win8 and flight sims, I am not about to voluntarily test 8.1, given the online comments about it and FSX. When it sweeps over me as a mandatory upgrade, I will let you know.

OK gents;

Windows 8.1 Pro RTM installed (as an upgrade from 8), several flights so far in FSX with random type of aircrafts  seems to be smooth (so far).

Thanks for the heads up, I'll breath easier when I hit that Update button in October. :)

Is the lost joystick bug fixed?

Hi Penta,

How was the experience going from 8.0 to 8.1 via the upgrade route? I'm debating whether or not to get Win8 reinstalled on my machine now and move up via Windows Update, or put 8.1 onboard fresh via a clean installation.

(*I never experienced the Win8 joystick issue when I initially used it, but punted back to Win7 due to some non-gaming compatibility issues which have been remedied at this point)

Any notable gotchas or issues with the update? All your programs and systems seem to be performing well without any of the "hangover" which might sometimes be associated with a major update overlaying a system?  Did it offer a fully clean reinstall (*needing you to reinstall all your applications), or did it only allow for an overlay install?

Curious,

-Greg

Hey y'all,

Any improvements on Joysticks stability with Windows 8.1?  I just got it downloaded from my MSDN subscription, and haven't installed it over 8 (timewise) due to massive reinstall of P3D and it's addons (mostly all orbx stuff).

So far using FSUIPC for joystick stability.

Looking forward to hearing feedback from everyone who has 8.1 installed

Thanks,

OK guys;

sorry for the late reply, upgrading to Win8.1 Pro from Win 8.0 Pro went very smoothly for me, FSX was working OK till I installed PMDG B777X then I started to have unusual FSX freezes and CTD with no error messages and some OOM problems (even with the OOM fix), tried to resolve as much as I can with no luck then I decided to go back to Win 7 64x as per PMDG recommendations and so far every thing is smooth for me (regarding PMDG B777X).

as far as the joystick bug: I did not have much time to test it before I start a fresh install of Win 7, sorry I was very frustrated at the time with PMDG 777X performance and forgot about every thing else.

I did a little experimenting with 8.1 as well.

FSX does indeed run on 8.1, but for the first time in recent memory, I encountered some program crashes, seemingly related to FSUIPC. Rather than trying to work through a solution, I opted to just return to Win7.

Sidenote: In my time running 8.0 earlier in the year, and 8.1 last week, I never encountered a single joystick dropout.

Regardless, I punted back to Win7 and no errors at all. FSX runs rock-solid as it always has.

I'm one of the few people that actually likes using the Win8 start screen to launch into my desktop, so I'm a little disappointed FSX has some hiccups in that regard. Alas, Win7 is no slouch either, so I'll just hang out there until some other intrepid users get things ironed out.

I'm not about to change a stable installation, but I did have the joystick disconnect issue for the first time on a long-haul 777 PMDG flight.  If Win 8.1 ever decisively fixed that, I'd consider it.
