Another DC-9 / MD panel question...

Featured Replies

OK, some brief surfing at the cockpit screen shots at airliners.net gave me quite a surprise. I've downloaded a bunch of panels to try out with the SGA new models, including Paul Golding's newest update. I was confused that every MD-series plane on airliners.net had a panel that looked like this one:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/96858.jpgAnd a quick look at the DC-9's showed the planes had panels remarkably similar to his new update:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/96859.jpgAm I correct using the top one for all my 82 through 90 series, and then the bottom one for the DC-9's? I just want to get things a close to 'real' as possible.Scott

The blue panel, by virtue of the autopilot and fuel gauges, wouldn't be accurate for a DC-9, only an MD-80. The blue panel would be appropriate for early build (ie before 1987) MD-81, -82, and -83 aircraft. The tan panel would work best for an MD-88, however, thanks to retrofiting and original customer purchasing options, it would also work in any of the MD-80s. MD-90s are a bit simpler, with most looking like the tan panel, except those built for Saudi Arabian Airlines, which look more like a MD-11/717 panel instead.MD80 panels came in quite a few different configurations. By having purchased used airplanes, as well as taking advantage of new options in avionics in new build aircraft, TWA ended up with 5 different MD-80 panel configurations (and at least two different colors). You could actually do a bit of mix and matching with the various gauges in both panels and still come up with a real MD-80 variation!

As Nick says ...some airlines had many differing configs. What I like to do is see if one can find a cockpit pic of the actual reg of the a/c you are flying ...and use the same config ...as real as it gets! :-hahI'm a nerd...I just love the subtle differences! :-lolregardsEdhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/94266.jpg

Well Im not a nerd and if you dont mind a few minor innacuracies the way you explained you would use those panels is EXACTLY how Im doing it. I cant edit panels like Ed and I dont mind it not being 100% perfect as I get that at work :) Seriuosly I use those panels just like you said, the upper for all 80-90's and the lower for all DC-9's. Works fine for me, they are really nice panels too with great frame rates.Hornit

I flew on an AA MD-82 from EWR to ORD two weeks ago. I peeked into the cockpit before boarding and it definitely had the blue non-CRT cockpit. Misha

I want to thank you guys for the quick responses! I saw the really-neat DC-9 set out recently, and then I read the read-me on it where it said that it was not a jump-and-go panel. Scared me off right there - I'm a screen-shotter, not a by-the-booker. That's why I've done major changes to make setting up for shots easier (ie - replacing the PMDG panel on my 737's with SkyDecks one instead, because I just could not figure out the FMC, etc..).I'm very happy with their performance, and I agree that they don't have much of a FPS hit at all. The only problem I have with both of them is that pesky SPOILER EXTENDED light coming on for no apparent reason in flight (I wish I could thump it with my finger like the guys from the opening of the movie War Games down in the missile silo - maybe it would go out!!)Scott

Scott, I too have the spoiler light issue. Did you ever find a fix? No, I haven't. And I'm not about to go hacking the panel.cfg to remove that gauge. It didn't start to happen until the guys came out with the fix package. I'll head over to their forums and let the designers know - maybe they'll figure it out...Scott
