September 15, 201312 yr Afternoon Folks, I'm going to vent a little here, something I rarely do online. And for the record, this is not directed at Avsim's forums per se. I was browsing through a support forum for a certain Kingair just now, reading a thread about memory management. It was a rather lengthy thread that was interesting until about 2/3 down when it suddenly devolved into yet another discussion about the recent global texture release by a southern hemisphere company. It was slightly shocking to see a discussion about an add on plane suddenly turn into how some companies are taking over your sim, etc., etc., etc. Please, please, please everyone, can't we stop this? By now most everyone knows how competitors feel about this recent release. Continual ranting about it is not doing anything to enhance their position, especially when hijacking a thread about an airplane! The product is out there, they can deal with it by improving their current product or work on a new one but don't continually inflict this venom on the customer base. I for one have had enough and will now begin to evaluate my future purchases with this in mind. I am a big boy, have been simming for over 25 years and I can make my own decisions about what I buy, what I install and what I remove. Developers should really stop occasionally and ask themselves am I helping myself and my business with my recent behavior? Thanks for reading and have a great Sunday. September 15, 201312 yr I saw the same thread. I raised an eyebrow when the developer who has had his boat rocked by a certain southern hemisphere developer likened said southern hemisphere developer to a drug pusher and their customers to addicts. Not to say this southern hemisphere developer is an angel - a response yesterday to a thread in their unofficial support forum here illustrated that very well. However, things are just getting ridiculous now. The fun is being sucked out of this hobby by so many overgrown egoes, agendas and the mad scramble for £/$/€. If things carry on like this much longer I can see myself throwing the towel in and pursuing another hobby. Nick
September 15, 201312 yr Author Good point, I absolutely should have added that this is a two way street. There is blame on both sides here. September 15, 201312 yr The fun is being sucked out of this hobby by so many overgrown egoes, agendas and the mad scramble for £/$/€. If things carry on like this much longer I can see myself throwing the towel in and pursuing another hobby. The thing is you have to learn to ignore most of what goes as in the back of your mind there is a voice that says, thing will get better as im sure they will. it is disheartening to see some of what goes on with in the community of simmers but you do see that everywhere on the internet regardless of game type. Ego has its part to play in it all but i find that missinformed people make things worse, treating the rumor mill as hard fact and then over reacting when they find out it has not gone the way they heard. I do feel sorry for avsim forum moderators sometimes as they are caught in the middle of this battlefield that has no winners when it happens. If people checked the facts of what they want to post before they post and was a bit better with construtive posting ( or a little nicer with the tone of what they are trying to say ) then it would not be as bad as some of what goes on is nothing but pure trolling in its most natural form. It is a small percentage though that brings it all down imo. One thing i will say though, when ever a developer releases a product, they all hope it will do well but the mad scamble for money is a bit wrong as its more like the simmers mad scamble to buy new addons, ive only just brought the NGX, waited ages to buy it and i enjoy flying her I do enjoy my hobby and im not going to let any one ruin it for me or take my fun away from it. -Paul-
September 15, 201312 yr I do enjoy my hobby and im not going to let any one ruin it for me or take my fun away from it. That's a really commendable stance to take, but it sometimes it can be really difficult... It's not just ordinary users posting on forums.... it's also publishers, developers, moderators... pretty much everyone nowadays seems to be in the grip of self destructive behaviour. It seems we are all on a hair trigger when it comes to this hobby. It's sad to see that instead of everyone helping eachother for the improvement of the hobby, we're all far more interested in tearing lumps off eachother... and I include all groups in that, not just the ordinary denizens of the various FS fora. Amen to that. The overall civility level has just tanked over the last 10 years or so. I'm about to enter my 60th decade next month and wonder what has happened to the Golden Rule, seems to be sadly missing these days. Such a simple rule really... September 16, 201312 yr It isn't the hobby that's gotten worse, it's the Internet. People letting their emotions run over. Some of the developers have fanned the flames, somewhat, too. September 16, 201312 yr Reminds me of the whole Samsung vs Apple debacle. As soon as one releases a product that the community prefer and enjoy more than the old tried and tested................all hell breaks loose.
November 24, 201312 yr Yep. People react like Pavlov's dogs to certain topics. Maybe we could keep in mind that when we might have found a product too simple, too hard, unworkable on your system, there are many others who enjoy it, and not just fools and knaves. There's something to be said for "if you don't have anything nice to say..." Yeah, I understand that there's a DUTY to WARN people away from horrifying rubbish that will sap their will to live!!! But maybe a little more perspective and less anger (and exaggeration)? Maybe if you've been around here for awhile and heard the same negative things over and over again, it just gets old. How about you play with the toys you like and I play with the toys I like and we're all happy everybody's having fun? There are dev forums I have learned not to expect much from, and others that are friendly, prompt and helpful. Fine. Just steer clear of the places you don't feel welcome and hang out where you do. In the end, we're all pretending to fly airplanes. We're engaging in play. That's all. (Some of us fly real airplanes, too, but not on our computers.) Maybe we should all ask ourselves "has this been said 10,000 times already?" before posting something negative. This should be a positive place for people to stoke their enthusiasm for a great hobby. Sometimes I leave just feeling sour.
