December 1, 200421 yr Good thread.I have NAV running on my primary XP instance ( C: ). I have since created a second XP instance on D:. Can I load AVG on this new second instance (which runs FS9 on yet another partition), with NAV still installed on XP on C:? Thanks, Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
December 1, 200421 yr <The issue isn't getting a virus while simming and staying connected via broadband but rather being hacked. That is a firewall issue not an AV issue. When simming, I disable my internet connection via a desktop short cut just as the poster suggested and then turn off my firewall. If you are on broadband and not connected via a network router, you WILL be hacked without a software firewall.
December 1, 200421 yr Not necessarily. You are vulnerable but far from all get hacked :) I have been doing fine really. All I have to do is remove spyware. Would hardly need any antivirus only spyware deleters like spybot
December 1, 200421 yr Hi,"AVG6 actually automatically scanned the files as soon as the download completed. I did not find the same option in AVG7.".....Yes, there is still a way in AVG7. I can only speak for Star Downloader, an excellent reliable FREE downloader utility with no advertising, spyware or pop-ups to plague you, but I am sure most other downloaders can be configured in a similar fashion. You employ a switch as in the image below:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/99390.jpgMike
December 1, 200421 yr I was skeptical about any noticable frame rate improvement from changing AV software, so I decided to uninstall NAV5 and install AVANT to see for myself.I noticed a 2-3 frame improvement in FS9. I don't doubt others picked up 5 frames, depending on their configuration.Count me in as a believer.
December 1, 200421 yr >Yes, I tried it both ways (autoprotect disabled and enabled).> The version is NAV 2002, I am not sure about the latest>version. Besides, disabling autoprotect kind of defeats the>purpose.>>Barry When flying, dont think you'd be downloading or reading email, and so disabling autoprotect does not defeat the purpose. With FSautostart, I remove all portions of Norton, and it reinstalls them when Im finished flying. Been doing this through several versions, and have yet to have any problems. Bob
December 1, 200421 yr Re NAV - for now if I simply disable all Norton services permanently, so that they never start does this prevent it from interfering with fs?I do not relish the thought of doing all i've just read on Norton's site re complete removal.regards,Mark Regards, Mark
December 1, 200421 yr "...for now if I simply disable all Norton services permanently, so that they never start does this prevent it from interfering with fs?"Sadly, Mark, that won't help alot. Norton roots itself very deeply into MS OS's and wants alot of control over what goes on, both on the surface and deep inside. As long as it's active and capable of working it will be using resources. When I dumped Norton I used the instructions at Symantec's site as well as numerous tips I'd found on the net. Even though I thought I had been thorough I still found a few Norton keys in the registry, though I think the app was pretty much dead. The only way I could get it completely off my system was to format (a bit drastic and not needed to stop the app from using resources).Hope this helps,Greg
December 1, 200421 yr There is a program RegCleaner, which not only cleans the registry, but has a Software removal feature. It will search out or track down all files related to Norton, and remove them. Bob
December 1, 200421 yr sigh :( - thanks Greg, guess there's no way round it then. I respect Norton's capabilities, but despise applications that like to 'take over' - just got the new rig and Norton won't even let me disable it's Friday night system scan - ugh!regards,Mark Regards, Mark
December 1, 200421 yr Try Regseeker http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm after a normal uninstall. A reformat is NOT necessary!
December 1, 200421 yr "..just got the new rig and Norton won't even let me disable it's Friday night system scan - ugh!"There is plenty of info at the Symantec site and on the web on how to render the app dead, Mark. In fact, there are some sites that consider Norton a virus, LOL, and offer great tips on removing it. May take a bit of time but it can be dealt the death blow.Good luck,Greg
December 1, 200421 yr Thanks I will try that.Shez Shez Ansari Windows 11; CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K; GPU: EVGA GEFORCE GTX 1080Ti 11GB; MB: Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Gaming 5; RAM: 16GB; HD: Samsung 960 Pro 512GB SSD, Samsung 850 Pro 256GB SSD; Display: ASUS 4K 28", Asus UHD 26"
December 3, 200421 yr Even when you disable auto-protect, NAV is still running in memory. I dumped NAV over 8 months ago and wen with AVG. This made a huge difference with regards to FS9's performance!Scott :-)
