Titan or 780 for P3D 2.0?

Featured Replies

Sorry to return to this - I know it's been covered in the past.  But in my defense... since it seems that Prepar3d 2.0 is going to take much greater advantage of the GPU, I thought that might be reason to take another look.

So, my question: specifically for P3D 2.0, is there reason to opt for the Titan over the 780?  Or would the Titan's advantages (somewhat greater speed, more VRAM) not make a real-world difference?  I could talk myself into spending more for a Titan, but I don't want to do that unless I'm going to see some benefit in P3D.  I'm not a gamer, just a flightsimmer, so performance in other games isn't a factor for me.

With the caveat that this is all speculation until P3D comes out - knowing what you know now, which way are you leaning?

...and you also could formulate that question that way : one or two SLIed 780s for P3D V2  ?I wonder too..

Yeah, I was thinking that.  Scary to contemplate fitting them into a water-cooled system.  Second pump?  Probably...

...and this is how my flightsim computer projects get out of hand...

Alan, all I can do is quote John Venema :

It is common knowledge already that P3D 2.0 renders autogen on DX11-compliant GPU hardware and is less CPU dependant. So if you upgrade anything at all, it would be your video card.

My advice: wait until 2.0 is released and see what your baseline performance is. If you want more FPS then, add a beefy GPU.

I am going to wait how it performs with my single screen setup using a 670 GTX.

LM isn't sure SLI support will be ready for 2.0 release and GPU prices will have dropped before 2.1 will be available.

To do SLI and Crossfire right will take some additional effort. If we don't get it in for 2.0 it's something we'll add for 2.1.

That seems wise.

My 680 is a bit challenged by heavy clouds now that I'm test-driving FSX DX10, so for that reason too I was considering an upgrade.  But you're right - since P3D 2.0 isn't that far off, better to wait a bit and see how the current system does.

Alan,

Your 680 is probably challenged because when compared to DX9,  DX10 AA needs a higher SGSS setting. DX11 could be a different beast.

The nightmare scenario to get the best out of it : one Titan for V2  and a second one on SLI for V2.1   !

I guess you're right it's prudent to wait, I've put my project on ice till the release.

Ah, interesting.  I'm at 8x across the board now.  I wonder if I can come down to 4x without shimmering?  If so, I can avoid setting fire to money 'til P3Dv2 gets here...

Right - and then a small generator to run them both!

I'm getting a 780 anyway at the end of the year.  Maybe v2.1 I'll get SLI.  Just quickly; is it necessary to run water through SLI setup as cards these days are so big, there may not be space for the cards to aircool?

Learning to use and getting use to FSX!

I run a 680 with DX11 programs/games. I wouldnt spend anymore money. But hey, its you $$$$$$$$$. Boost the economy, go for a Titan.

I'm honestly not sure - maybe someone with more SLI experience can comment.  Actually, I'm not sure that I get any direct performance benefit from water-cooling my 680 - I've never had heat-related problems with it.  But having it in the water loop helps keep the system quiet and dust-free, so I run it that way.  Makes it a bit harder to change video cards but worth it to me.  Probably not necessary, though.

I can add it to my long history of economic stimulus...  B)

I'm so glad I kept my 2 GTX 480s. In SLI it will be interesting to see what kind of fps I'll get.

I'm scared about my video card. They aren't cheap. I don't need max settings but still...

780 OC (single GPU) is best bang for the buck ... multi-GPU support may not be in V2.0 but might be aimed at V2.1 ... multi-GPU support will benefit very large resolutions and of course higher AA values (but typically the more resolution you have, the less AA you need).  Tessellation is probably a key indicator ... as I understand it P3D 2.0 will support Tessellation (one important reason to go to DX11).

Here are some tests done with the various cards with Tessellation:

You can overclock a 780 to very near Titan performance leaving the only plus of the TITAN the Extra Ram. I don't think its worth an extra $300 or perhaps $400 for a Titan under any circumstances flight sim wise.
