October 18, 201312 yr Howdy, X-Planers, According to Ben Supnik there are over 250 airports with buildings that have been submitted by the community and which are included with 10.25. On his blog, Ben showed screenshots for four of them, which he identified. In answer to a question in the comments section, he said he will publish an ICAO list. We all know that Ben is a busy guy, but we don't know when he'll be able to get around to doing that. In the meantime, I have a suggestion. As we X-Plane users discover them why don't we post them in this thread? Then we can all benefit in more quickly discovering these new additions. Let's start with Ben's examples I mentioned above: They are KMKG, Muskegon;KPNE,Northeast Philadelphia; KSAW,Marquette; KFLL,Fort Lauderdale. Next I'll add my discovery, which I found to be surprisingly good: KHPN, White Plains. The rest is up to you, and me of course, if I discover any more. Good Hunting! Tom P.S. And I offer my heartfelt thanks to all you community members who have contributed to creating these airports. It will be great to say to new enquirers about X-Plane, "yes, there are default airports with structures on them, over 250!"
October 18, 201312 yr I just extracted the same list, saves me from uploading. I must say, some airports in this list are not really populated. Maybe people doing some trivial change and sending to Robin ?
October 18, 201312 yr Author Having looked at the list that Greggerm gave us a link to, I noticed that the scenery I thought I had discovered, namely KHPN, is not on the list. That could only mean that it was in my Custom Scenery folder, and sure enough there it was. I must have installed it sometime ago and then forgotten about it. I mention this only to prevent any of you interested in that scenery from going on a wild gooose chase. Sorry for the misinformation. What's really giving me consternation now is that I can't figure out where I got it. I checked X-Plane.org, Avism, X-Pilot, and Flightsim.com, and I didn't get any hits. Maybe one of you will know where there is a version of it, in case anyone's interested. Regards, Tom
October 20, 201312 yr ...or, we can look at the list! Thank you for that...that's the start of what I see is the difference between the last non beta. Will have to explore and enjoy.
October 20, 201312 yr I just extracted the same list, saves me from uploading. I must say, some airports in this list are not really populated. Maybe people doing some trivial change and sending to Robin ? I certainly hope this won't be the norm. It's a bit disingenuous for someone to make a small or unseen adjustment to an airport, like a nav aid or runway sign and submit it for inclusion, especially when most people are looking for visual enhancements to what is by default a very barren world. While I do appreciate the freely given contributions by people looking to improve the sim for all, what concerns me is the possibility of this scenerio: As more and more airports are added, someone decides to compile a database for designers to consult to see which airports are done before starting a project. So, for example, someone decides to do MYGF, Grand Bahama International. Going by the current airports list, it's already been done, so it could potentially be skipped. Except that as I'm currently looking at it with all options maxxed out, I see nothing obvious from the default. A good third of the airports in the list are the same way. I think there needs to be a baseline criteria for airport scenery submissions for inclusion in an official update. It needs to have something visual. A tower, or hangar. Something. If someone wants to correct navaids, let them send the info as a bug report. October 21, 201312 yr So, for example, someone decides to do MYGF, Grand Bahama International. Going by the current airports list, it's already been done, so it could potentially be skipped. Except that as I'm currently looking at it with all options maxxed out, I see nothing obvious from the default. A good third of the airports in the list are the same way. The list linked above is _NOT_ the list of airports with buildings. About 250 airports with buildings have been shipped with 10.25, while the list above contains a greater number than that. The actual list of airports with buildings (shipped with 10.25) can be found here: http://wiki.x-plane.com/Beta "Society has become so fake that the truth actually bothers people".
October 21, 201312 yr I've reported my own post above to the moderators in the hopes it gets removed. Indeed, I didn't even notice that the list was just too long to be 250ish airports. The list I attached is probably the list of ALL airports changed - from layouts only, to the ones having layouts and buildings. My apologies to anyone who was led astray by the list I posted up. I didn't create the list, but I did repost it as being fact. Never a good situation. -Greg
October 21, 201312 yr Ah, then disregard my post above. Too late for me to edit it out. "No matter how eloquent you are or how solidly and firm you've built your case, you will never win in an argument with an idiot, for he is too stupid to recognize his own defeat." ~Anonymous.
October 21, 201312 yr I think there needs to be a baseline criteria for airport scenery submissions for inclusion in an official update. It needs to have something visual. I think there's only two criteria being considered for submissions to Robin. - The scenery package is valid when run through the validator. - X-Plane doesn't crash. To be quite frank, while minor modifications are not what is hoped for, it doesn't detract from the x-plane experience either. In the meantime, I'm working on Humberside airport (EGNJ) on WED, and you've reminded me to add some taxi signs.
October 21, 201312 yr Hi Anthony d, Interested to see you're modelling a UK airport. Given my location, the lack of any upgrades to Uk airports in the list, the desire to stoke the fires of international competition as expressed in the number of resonalbe airports in XP10: can you advise on the best sources for advice on starting a project for a tech newbie, Thanks TIM
October 21, 201312 yr can you advise on the best sources for advice on starting a project for a tech newbie, There's a newly created video tutorial here: http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=16978 Skip the part about aerial images from Geotiffs - unfortunately for the UK you have to do this manually - by dragging the image over the existing airport for best fit. I think step one in any successful scenery project is a good quality background image of the airport you're working on. I stitch together screenshots of aerial photos in gimp, and use the resulting image as a background template in WED. I've created Aberdeen before: http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=16978 I made custom objects for Aberdeen, which takes many days of effort. Humberside is an endeavor which I'm making entirely from the default objects, and takes less time. You can fly to LSXB, LNMC or SMTO to see other examples of my work in x-plane.
October 21, 201312 yr So, for example, someone decides to do MYGF, Grand Bahama International. Going by the current airports list, it's already been done, so it could potentially be skipped. With this example, if the designer really wanted to work on MYGF, I think it would be incumbent on the designer to take a look at the quality of the job which may/may not already exist and make the decision whether or not they wanted to take a shot at it above and beyond what was already done. I hope designers are not bashful when it comes to making improvements or wholesale changes to airport designs which may have been already submitted. Some of the 60+ airports I submitted into this project are (IMHO) well crafted and good looking, while others I'll freely admit are a bit on the sparse side of things and only have the basics of new hangars, terminals, and parking structures. I hope my more detailed works stand the test of time, but I wouldn't be offended in the slightest of another designer came around and really reworked an airport I had spent a cursory amount of time on. -Greg
