And, yes, just like any addiction ... I simply couldn't let a $2,700 investment flounder without going the extra mile.  As we say, in the software development world, the last 10% requires 90% of the effort.

But this FSX is a slippery slope ... poorly programmed ... nicely appointed ... and just like a woman ... certainly has a personality doesn't she?

So far ... I'm pleased ... it appears that the shimmering on monitor two has been significantly minimized ... and the temps on all four cores ... no HT ... maxed at 46/52/50/50/52 (with Package being the last figure).  So, no, with de-lidding, lapping and water cooling ... there is absolutely no throttling going on here ...

Gonna try my check ride ... one more time.

Just like the Godfather ... just when I think I'm out ... they pulla me back in.

Glad to see you're back in. For what it's worth Charles, you will never get perfection when it comes to FSX, but I believe you can get it close enough to enjoy what this is really all about:

Turning off that FPS counter and creating a flight experience as close to reality as you can.

Rick Hobbs

Well ... just finished a check ride with DVA from KIAD to KJFK ... Parkway Visual Approach 13L/R ... and I had no visible problems.

Honestly, I was focusing really hard on the PFD and the navigation ... not to mention the throttles ... (as I elected to disgard A/T for manual) ... and ... well ... the visual approach ... I really didn't have much time to enjoy the scenery.

But, with that in mind, I didn't "notice" too many artifacts ... as the rules of "engagement" to pass the check ride were rather strict!

I guess ... in retrospect ... this implementation is a success!

On to Honduras!

Funny story here ... and coming from a Sailor (USN) this is a no shitter.  I moved from WV to south FL right after the towers fell ... had to move into a camper ... a fifth wheel actually ... for a period of time until my home in WV sold and we could close on our home in Wellington.  I purchased said camper from an American Airlines pilot by the name of Alan Cox.  His specialty was to fly into the Honduras airport of Toncontin ... (he called it tagooseegalpa ... phonetically speaking) ... I didn't have a clue what the Hell that was or how it was really spelt) .. I never vetted his story as he didn't know me ... I didn't know him and he had no reason to misrepresent himself).  As it pans out ... it was this story that seeded itself into my soul ... because ... unbeknownst to him ... I had just installed MSFX 2004 on my smokin' new laptop ... well ... the rest is ... financial ruin for me <s> and well ... I hope he is still alive.

Assuming FSX doesn't crash, it will be a very stuttery 15 if I'm lucky. If I max everything I get a paltry 5 FPS, depending on where I'm looking.

So there is nothing wrong AMD then ?

Want to know the one thing he said to me that will stick with me to this day?

"We can have up to an 11 mile approach ... a monkey can land these things" ...

I did not know what he was talking about at the time ... but I do now.

What busy airport on the planet lines a plane like this more than one or two fixes before the FAF?

I harken back to the first online flight I had ... maneuvering into Orlando from the north into south ops ... the ATC said descend and maintain 3,000 ... I said "The chart says ... 5,000" ... he calmly retorted ... "Descend and maintain 3,000" ... I complied and was neatly inserted into the pattern .... and landed nicely.

These are the stories that give me the feeling that yes ... you are poor ... but ... with the help of other like minded flighophiles ... you can "Believe you can fly"!

And, quite frankly, as I was peddling that tricycle above JFK earlier on today ... Steven Spielberg had nothing on me!

If I go to Darwin in Australia, I get over 300 FPS. What is your point

His point I believe is  why would  you set every thing to min for  just to get over a certain amount of fps watching.  I  got  my fps  locked at 30  all my  sliders to max  except  for  autogen which is  set  to 3/4, got  no fsx  tweaks  at all except for  the pmdg ones that are recommended  to use. And  have no issues  since I don't  bother watching the fps at all, i just worry about the smoothness of the flight  and iam using the amd  radeon hd 7900 series  13.1 card

I really don't think there is anything sexier than watch beautiful blonde jump into the FO seat and fly me to ... well ... I have no idea where I was going ... but there was only one thing prettier in that cockpit ... and that was the displays.

And yes ... this is my last story ... the last flight story I have actually ...  it happened at Charlie West KCRW ... on a Canadian Regional Jet ... I was a measly coder at the time ... but I knew I liked what I saw ... and loved what I was in.

If I load the default Cessna, in most parts of the FSX world, I get 200+ FPS. If I go to Darwin in Australia, I get over 300 FPS. What is your point????????

I'm wasting my time typing this, but I will anyway. Performance aside, you fail to recognize that it causes INSTABILITY! What use is it if it causes a CTD 5 hours into a flight? ABSOLUTELY USELESS is what it is!!!!!!!

WHY does the CTD occur? ASK MICROSOFT. All this talk of bufferpools, etc.., is like saying because your car is painted blue it is more likely to suffer a flat tyre.

Do you know how many times I nearly threw FSX in the bin??? I bought the MD-11 for FSX at release. I didn't fly it for nearly 3 years because I didn't fly FSX for that time, as it was too unstable. I really wanted to fly the MD-11 in FSX, so I persevered for 2 MONTHS whilst I tried every possible combination of setting I could think of. I was trying desperately to make FSX run stable AND have some eye candy (you think I don't want that as well?). My conclusion? The EYE CANDY is precisely what was preventing it running well!!!! I never ran AI to start with as I always flew online in some form, so I inadvertently avoided the memory leak bug that is present in the AI traffic.

I discovered AutoGen was also causing problems when I flew a few times with it disabled out of desperation, and found I didn't suffer CTDs as a result. Hello flights > 5 hours!

If you read this forum, you will find a post by Tabs that states that sitting in the Fly Now screen for any period of time with any aircraft selected will eventually result in a crash. Please tell me which FSX tweak fixes this? Hint: there isn't one.

Best regards,

Robin.

I guess it is pointless to reply to you....so I am replying here to help others. So that they dont kill as many PCs (or FSX setups I guess) as you. Something you seem to be so proud of.(I just found another thread where you are stating and advising very curios things).

At the same time I am trying to keep things sivilised and ask you to do the same.

Replying with ??????????? and !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is always at the start of things escalating.

Robin said:

My current computer is 3 years old, cost 1/6th the cost of your new rig, and I get a cool 40 FPS minimum with the 777.

He also said that he has AI traffic completely turned of and autogen completely turned off and does not/hardly use any addon scenery.

So I replied that I get + 100fps under the same scenario with the 777.

Thats all I am saying.

His reply of 300fps in a cessna over Australia makes no sence to me.

I thought we were talking about the 777 here.

Again we not to be comparing apples with apples here, he is not in my opinion.

2)I ask what happens if he turns AI and autogen on.

He answeres with Bufferpools, blue cars and what not?

I dont think I mentioned bufferpools in this thread.

I never used Bufferpools and have good performance (no CTD or OOM).

As it happens I just started experimenting with bufferpools (both set at 0 and with the reject threshold method) to see if I can reduce VAS use with it. But it is to early to recommend anything right now.

Then he talks about instability and CTDs.

I dont know why he is trying to counter my arguments by implying I have CTDs or Stability problems.

I do not have CTDs or OOM problems!

Can I make FSX OOM and CTD?

Sure, but I have learned what causes OOMs and so I know what I can do to reduce the likelyness of OOMs occuring.

And that is what everybody should do and is doing here in the forums.

Read, learn and apply.

Sure FSX can still throw surprises at you.

But shutting down everything FSX offers is not the way to go in my opinion.

3)

Then he states he has wanted to throw his PC in the bin many times.

To me this proves he is doing things wrong.

He is not reading, learning and applying.

He just does things spontanuously and in the process kills a few PCs.

I have read through a lot of info as well.

That info has lead me to believe Intell and Nvidia are the way to go for an FSX dedicated PC.

I bought my Ivy and GTX680, installed things correctly as laid out in all info I had at hands.

And....voilla.....a functioning, stutter free, smooth, not OOMing not CTDng FSX PC :-)

With AI and with Autogen and with SOME eyecandy.

(REX,GEX,UTX,FSGenesis,MYTraffic, addon airports....but so far no ORBX FTX products)

SOME because as we all know (should know) no matter how modern your PC, there is only so much FSX can do because it can not make (full) use of all modern inventions like multicore, hyperthreading etc.

I am getting pretty close to that limit, especially with the PMDG777 but as you can see, one can use quite some eyecandy and not run into problems.

I have no idea what that has to do with my post?

Also this problem is documented in the PMDG tutorial guide as well.

And no it can not be changed.

Not by buying AMD hardware or shutting off AI Traffic.

Not by not using autogen and not by refraining from buying any addon scenery.

So I have no idea what his reference to this FSX bug is supposed to teach us.

I dont know why the OP is having problems, but with his hardware (better than mine) I am sure we can fix it without shutting everything down in FSX.

Yep ... with that ... I must take my leave ...

But as I stated previously ... I'll collate my settings ... with reference to certain basic concepts of hardware assumptions ... and report back to the crowd

Right now I'm sitting on the cheapest GE90-110B1s on the planet ... and pumping up the volume.

How can you compare your system with anyone else. Autogen @ 0, no thank you. Autogen @ zero is not the thing to do in FSX. Sparse maybe, but Zero can cause rotton performance. In FS9, this was quite the opposite.

What you have posted in this thread is very mis leading, especially to the casual reader who is new to "tweaking".

Thanks, Julian.

Guess, that's exactly why Ryan chimed in here ...

What happened to AVSIM

Try venetubo... As much as many people oppose it and say "Automatic Tweaking doesn't work" I have to be honest that its been the only tweak that has taken full advantage of my computer's resources (in a good way). I recently bought a gaming computer and around that time venetubo was down momentarily so I resorted to using tweaks from somewhere else. I couldn't get over 10 FPS and I had no idea why but the moment venetubo came back online and I used the modified FSX.cfg from there everything was perfect. 30FPS everywhere I go no matter the airport or plane. I even have my sliders maxed out (for the most part). I use alot of Airport scenery (deactivated when not flying to) and FTX Global and FSGlobal. If you didn't try venetubo just give it one try and see if its the one thing to fix your problems, for me it was just that. http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html

Exactly! That is why I take the effort of writing such a long reply. Not because I have to be right. But for those who are new to the forums here or new to FSX who are given the advice to turn everything off in FSX, and sell there 4770k with GTX780 and trade it for a three year old AMD!

See, and that is fair advice.

Although I would personally stay away from it and I would not advice its use, I can accept that others have a different opinion and thus they say...."hey why dont you try this or that. It might not work for you but it worked for me and it is worth a try"

Nothing wrong with someone stating that he has good results with AMD either.

Or to try without AI traffic or autogen to see if that resolves a problem, nothing wrong with that either.

But the way Robin has presented his radical opinion as facts..."everybody do this or else you will CTD and OOM and have stability issues.....that is not ok!

Rob Robson

AMD are better processors for a few reasons:

Price - AMD chips are significantly cheaper than Intel in most cases.

Power Consumption - AMD processors tend to use much less power than an Intel equivalent.

Temperature - AMD chips often run cooler than Intel. This means the computer might run quieter too.
