February 26, 201412 yr Moderator I don't believe he said that the scenery was loaded, he said that it was indexed. If it's not being loaded why is there a problem? Why should the fact it's being indexed make any difference to performance in FSX? All this seems like semantics to me. I'm not really interested in FSX loading 2 seconds faster. I'm looking to maximise available VAS. I don't have any of the OrbX scenery packages, just FTX Global which will remain active in all scenery configurations - obviously. All I intend to do is have two configurations - one for the US with all European airports disabled and another for Europe with US ones disabled. I'll measure how much free VAS I have with a fully enabled scenery.cfg and again after making those changes. It will be interesting to see exactly how much difference there is. February 26, 201412 yr As I have already said, it is best to use FTX Central to enable and disable their scenery areas, not just because the .bgl files need to be switched on or off but also because the autogen and terrain settings are altered and then reset to default. This is a strange statement to me as I use FTX Central and have activated the default which removes all Orbx products from the Scenery.cfg. However, as I stated above, the Orbx files in the Scenery/World/Scenery (all .bgl's) are still loaded. They are not turned off as you describe. Any .bgl in that folder will load whether it is used in your flight plan or not. In my case I have several elevation .bgl's and several traffic bgl's for Jackson Hole, Orbx NRM, Orbx PFJ, and Orcas. Not a biggy but they are still activated and running no matter what flight plan you are running. So, in this case they were indexed and they are loaded during the flight. You can verify this for yourself by using Process Monitor and screening out everything except FSX. Best regards, Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource! February 27, 201412 yr This is a small selection of the NRM elevation files in my scenery\World\scenery with FTX Central set at default (or Global). and PFJ I also have NZNI, NZSI, and PNW files, they all have the suffix .OFF The traffic files I have are indeed still active
February 27, 201412 yr You do not need to remove the entry completely from the scenery.cfg in order for it not to be loaded... FSX reads the scenery.cfg file on loading and acts accordingly, loading only those that are marked as active. I see a marked reduction in intial loading time of scenery, say a UK-based OrbX airport with underlying FTX_EU_ENG region when using the SCE and deactivating all the scenery I do not need for the purpose of simulating my chosen flight from a given departure to a given arrival aerodrome. I would guess a 50% reduction, if not more... Since I use FTX Global and have the hybrid mode active (ie, I have no "default" FSX any more...), I can activate and deactivate the FTX regional entries as I see fit. I have yet to see any issue resulting from this method... You just have to invest a bit of time in configuring your scenery packages and creating groups accordingly. A Andrew Entwistle
