Nvidia GTX780 DX10 experience (please share)

Okay the sharpness and quality around gauges had to do with NI and Anisotropic filtering. This should be =ON for both filter and sample optimization. Looks very very sharp in DX9 and 10.

Also i am going for 8x CSAA in the DX10Fixer. This gives me really nice performance.

Still i am using DX9 with the NGX because of my CDUII and PFD/ND Undocked. No stutter and no performance hit there. Actually DX9 is smoother than DX10 with AMD so its only OOM the worrys me :-)

After some flying hours in DX10 testing settings within NI i think its fair to say that the Vsync in WindowedMode is not working at least on my system. I have a 60HZ Monitor and right know i see 80fps in FL370 in the T7 over Canada.

It is also strange that i have to have Texture filtering - Aniso sample and Filter=ON to have sharp NGX/777 PFD´s etc.

I have 4xSGSS and 4 x in DX10 fixer

I do have some small tearing or microstutter when panning in the VC maybe because of this Vsync issue ? Limit the FPS helps when flying high though

I have FPS set to unlimited because these heavies have problems as well around Paris,London etc where +25fps is a must with VAS closing in at 4GB.

For now i have to use DX9 when i want to use my CDUII . I must admit Vsync in DX9 makes it smoother than the experience without it in DX10.(Windowed mode)

331.82 for now

Hmm below is an issue with P3d2 which sounds like exactly my problem in DX10 FSX undocking panels

My FPS dropped. What happened?
We have some known issues where the main app window loses focus after clicking on UI windows, context menus, and undocked prepar3D windows. The operating system the treats Prepar3D as a background app and throttles the application causing a drop in FPS and GPU utilization.

The 780 is indeed a monster and I expect it is very Ultimate in FSX for accepting high levels of AA and big resolutions. I am waiting for the equivalent in ATI (the R9 290) to try out. My experience is that both brands are fairly equal in FSX now. Although in DX10 mode, Steve's Cloud Shader and setting water above Low2x was causing spikes. Disable Cloud Shader in the fixer and set water to 2xLow and no spikes. When your system can take it, I give nVidia the nod for AA in FSX. It is a hair sharper with 4xSGSS. It gets rid of all shimmers. If ATI 4xSSAA is 95% shimmer free, 4xSGSS is 99%. Let us know how it does over KJFK with a big thick layer of clouds. Max density, 90 miles radius, FSX sliders mostly maxed in a PMDG plane with 4xSGSS.

Budget wise, the GTX780 starts at $519 whereas the 7970Ghz (R9 280X or GTX680) is a $299 card. There is a big gap for sure which is also the performance gap you would expect. You get what you paid for. The R9 290 will be allot more card than the 7970 was and is priced at only $399. Crappy stock cooler though. Waiting on the aftermarket boys to get this done right in another 2 weeks. MSI's and ASUS's version should be really cool. I will not be coughing up over $400 for a card anymore. I've been chasing that tail long enough.

Grats on the new kit!

I am a little confused because i sometimes think the NI is not going to effect FSX when using a batchfile for auto starting Aero after FSX .

Also the Windowmode which i use all the time because of externally hardware reacts differently than Fullscreen-mode. My fps is cut in half which properly is because of the 1/2 refresh rate in NI making the GPU taking the control of it. Its smooth down to 18-20 fps in fullscreen thats for sure.

Also Aniso filters is not needed anyway for sharpness. I do have FXAA off (same goes for P3d2 as it gives blurry textures)

The T7 is a little hard on the system but i did a flight from CYVR-KJFK with FSDT with smooth FPS 25-30fps during takeoff and 20-28 fps Vsync Fullscreen during landing. This was with VeryDense settings and 25% UTII 1920x1200. TML=HD2048 ,REX1024 and my normal fsx.cfg

But DX10 in windowmode is a problem on my system especially when undocking panels. Right clicking on the undocked panel and showing the menu gives a relativ stable FPS but this is not a solution

Seems like i have found a work around with this issue with undocking panels in DX10. Right now i am in heaven with the NGX and my EVGA 780SC ACX and my overcloked I7-4770K@4,7 and Active Sky Next,FTXG,FSG2010FTX,

The solution for me was to undock the main window even in Windowed Mode. Now i can use my FMC(CDUII) and have smooth DX 10 on very Dense settings and traffic and stable FPS . No need for limiting the fps as it is so good.

Just a mini report from a happy DX10ér

Fantastic! Congratulations! I am certainly glad to see your success, Michael! These pics are excellent. You just demonstrated what some grit and determination (plus some money :(  ) can do.

FSX with DX10 and some high-end hardware with a high overclock are what is needed to get FSX to perform at this level of satisfaction. A bit of tweaking here and there, yes, but it can be done.

Thanks so much for this great update! You da MAN!

You are also now the "DX10 multi-monitor expert" - the "go-to man"! OK!

All the Best, Merry Christmas if you celebrate it, or just have a great holiday if you don't!   B)

I've had this a couple of times. What worked for me was to make a quick sdfdsfsdf.exe on my desktop. Add that one to the fsx profile and then delete the fsx.exe one. Add fsx.exe again and remove the sdfdsfsdf.exe. Then the fps stays at 30 again also with unlimited with ni 1/2 refresh rate.

Note: you need to add the sdfdsfsdf.exe first because if you dont do it and remove the fsx.exe it removes the profile.

What GTX 780 is recommended guys make and model please?

Thanks Poul and a Merry Christmas to you too. Also apreciate all your work.

Btw. I found a thread over at Nvidia driver forum answered by some administrators about CPU Core Parking. Seems like this can cause stutter so i tried it out via regedit. Cant recall you guys mention this with Windows 7? Google it and try it out. I think it helped me a bit. Coreparking was set at 64% on my system

CoreParking is automatically disabled when you set the PC into Performance mode, Michael.

Hi Poul , Well i actually thought that too but i think it is not the whole story. My system is in Performance mode and yet the CPU Parking was at 64%. Might be me but i did change this to 0% as in this http://ultimatecomputers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3644

Hello, I`ve purchased Steve`s DX10 Fixer Software, Been tweaking for a couple of days. One thing i`m impressed about is how smooth my FSX is now, i get 30 fps no matter what scenery or addons, its a new sim for me. I need to find a way of removing the leading edge and trailing edge Jaggies so its sharp again like DX9 was. I struggled to eliminate my Vsync issues but its fixed. Just a small thanks too everyone for the advice here and also on Steve`s blog.

Interesting Nvidia post, Michael.. I reset my HT back on, changed the CP performance setting (which is already set in Inspector) and the AM, but FSX lost it's smoothness and stuttering set in ( ), so she's back to 14.  Gotta try everything, though - right!

Happy and Prosperous New Year!

Hi Rick! Welcome to the DX10'ers club!

I can't tell you what to do until you put your system specs (and any overclock) into your Profile, Rick - so we can see it, and then we need you to copy/paste your fsx.cfg to "Rick_fsx.txt", attaching it to your reply. At the same time (assuming you have an Nvidia GPU) pop a screenshot of your Inspector settings somewhere, so we can see that, too.

You might also follow the thread that Arjen and I have going, as there's info in it that you can use - ok!

All the Best,

pj
