FS2004 to FSX Upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am currently running the following system specifications:

  • Intel i3-2120 Sandybridge Core i3 Dual-Core Processor
  • Asus P8H61-M LE/USB3 Motherboard
  • CiT Orion Midi Tower Gaming Case 2x Red LED Fan with Side Window
  • Corsair memory 8GB SODIMM (2x4GB)
  • Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F2 EcoGreen SATA II 300 32MB
  • Ace PSU 600W 12cm red fan
  • Samsung DVD RW
  • Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 CPU Cooler
  • Palit Graphics Card 512MB GeForce 8400GS super DDR3
  • Microsoft Wired Desktop 600
  • Windows 7 Professional

I currently use Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 with the following add-ons:

  • UK2000, Aerosoft, SimWings sceneries.
  • Ground Environment Professional
  • ActiveSky 6.5
  • iFly 737, PMDG 747, QualityWings 757, LevelD 767, Wilco A318-340.
  • SquawkBox (for connection to VATSIM)
  • Aerosoft Airport Enhancement Services

I can run that smooth at around 24 frames, sometimes dropping to around 15 when there is a heavy cloud base.

However, with Christmas coming up, I'm looking to upgrade to upgrade the system that would be capable of running Microsoft Flight Simulator X with the following addons, and a minimum of 30 consistent frames per second (or more, of course! :P):

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator X
  • PMDG 737 NGX, PMDG 747, QualiityWings 757, LevelD 767, PMDG 777
  • Airbus X Extended (A320/A321)
  • UK2000, Aerosoft, SimWings sceneries
  • ORBX Ground Textures
  • FSINN with improved AI Aircraft
  • GSX (Ground Services X)
  • Real Environment Xtreme (Weather textures)
  • ActiveSky (Weather Engine)

Please could you suggest some upgrades to my current aforementioned PC specifications. Preferably, I would only like to upgrade the Processor, RAM and/or the Graphics Card. When this is the case, please could you suggest the hardware that is compatible with my current motherboard, etc etc etc.

Thank you in advanced. If you have any questions please let me know.

Are there any i5s that are compatible with the mother board I mentioned above?

Only a 2500 or 2500k, which will see negligible results as the H61 chipset does not allow for multiplier unlocking IIRC.

You want either a 3570k with a Z77 chipset board or a 4670k with a Z87 board.

Why would you want to transfer to FSX instead of P3D V2.0 which is about to be released?

Skip FSX like Windows Vista.  P3D 2.0 is the next gen FS and it is here (almost).

He wants to use PMDG aircraft.

Hi all, sorry for the delayed reply.

I'm not really interested in P3D at the moment, more so FSX as I originally stated. Thank you for your assistance never the less.

So, if I were to get a 3570k or 4670k, this would require a new Motherboard?

Cheers!

Correct, a 3570k would need a s1155 board of the Z68 or Z77 chipset, a 4670k would need a s1150 board of the Z87 chipset.

I've had a little research (yes, little to me, as I'm not clued up with all this! ).

This is my current Motherboard (along with specifications) and I see that it is a 1155 socket.

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8H61M_LEUSB3/#specifications

I have then looked for a 1155 Intel i5 CPU and have found the following:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-I5-3470-Processor-3-20GHZ-Socket/dp/B0083U94CO#

I'm looking to rather keep my  motherboard as it's a lot of hassel getting a new one. Would the CPU there be good enough for the ways I would like to use it in the OP?

Now he can!

Yes, if he can afford a PMDG license for Prepar3D, there would be no reason for him to move to FSX at all.

I say no...with the H61 chipset in your current mobo, you're unable to overclock, and running at a stock 3.2 GHz is going to be pretty underwhelming in FSX with your desired add-ons.
