FSD Piaggio Avanti -- How is it?

Featured Replies

The maintenance feature appears to have a bug...the flight hours increment at 1 flight hour logged per 1 second actually flown.Biggest drawback is the apparent overpower...Steve Small's great reputation aside, it's going to take some tech data to assuage my concerns that this flight model is heavily overpowered, really to the point of being unbelievable. Also in the FDE department, the pitch/drag changes with flaps look pretty aggressive...again, to the point of distraction. There are a few other smaller issues, like heading/course bugs that take a loooong time to slew, and a very basic autopilot that is pretty sluggish capturing/holding a course. The P180 is an interesting plane...I had a nice long chat with a couple of Italian AF P180 pilots on the ramp at Sarajevo a few years ago. They gave me a nice tour of the Piaggio, and I gave 'em a tour of the Gulfstream V.Anyway, the FSD add-on has potential, but needs a bit more work I think.CheersBob ScottATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-V L-300Washington, DC

Another power issue seems to be incorrect modeling of the condition levers, unless I'm totally wrong.Put the aircraft in level flight (my example is at 5000'). Fly at a steady state, say 210kts IAS. Retard the throttle only, and for me it takes a little over two minutes for the speed to bleed off to below 180kts. Keep the throttle pulled back (all the way), now retard the condition levers to either flight or ground idle and the aircraft will accelerate back up to around 187kts IAS, and stay there.I was testing to see how long and far it takes to slow down and noticed it took way too long with the condition levers at flight idle (compared to MAX RPM). Also, I tried this at the highest and lowest realism settingsAlso for me the ET doesn't work on the chronometer.Overall still a very enjoyable aircraft, hopefully it will all get fixed. Joe Lorenc

Good infor, Bob and Joe.May I ask both of you to go post your findings in FSD's support forum? FSD might be more likely to see this info over there. Thanks!

BobI am close with a company who operate two Commander 690 turboprops and they got very near to purchasing an Avanti. It has an amazing cabin, handling and speed but what held them back was the aircrafts chequered financial history and the limited aircraft in the sytem. They were worried about the resale values whenever they came to sell which seems to be the thing that holds many back. This is a shame as the aircraft is stunning and very capable and im sure under ferrari that aspect will stabilise.I decided to hold back on purchase of the FSD version as I never buy Christmas release aircraft no matter where they are from.Experience usually says that they are rushed out the door to capture the Christmas market with inevitable patches to follow.Peter

Hello Shane,I did post my findings there already under another thread "Speedy ... something" Hopefully it will get noticed and fixed. As I said, even with that I think it is a blast to fly. (I guess you could take that as a pun on Bob's findings :-lol :-lol )Joe Lorenc

We will be addressing some issues today and issuing a Service Release within the next 48 hours. There are a couple issues we know need to be addressed, and many reported are simply problems not following the checklists to the letter (it is unforgiving in the highest realism level). A brand new aircraft, with complex systems is sometimes hard to get used to.You will find much more comprehensive and up-to-date information on our support forum at our web site.Keep the blue on top!http://www.fsd-international.com/team/TD_forum_sig.gif

Shane; I would if I could get past the rather user-unfriendly registration process on their forums. They won't allow registrations with yahoo or hotmail addresses, so I have to start the registration process over with a different address.RegardsBob ScottATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-V L-300Washington, DC

This may sound like I'm being a little picky but what I don't like about this new release and I hope FSD fixes is the sound set. As things are now you have virtually no wind noise. As quiet as those engines are you should be able to hear the wind if nothing else. I also hope they update the cabin night lighting. Something on the level of what Eaglesoft has done with their CJ1.All in all this is a great add-on... :-wave

They weren't "gripes" or "arguments" they were his comments in response to the original poster's questions.Whether the comments were weak or strong depends on the author's point of view, not yours. Hello John,Could I trouble you as well as some other Avanti pilots to check the operation of the propellor rpm levers in the Avanti. I am finding that they are no longer functional above FL250 and the rpm remains at 2,000 regardless of setting. I am using a CH throttle quadrant with a registered FSUIPC filtering and enabling feathering. FSD support states that they cannot reproduce this and would like to know if anyone else is noticing this and can verify it. If it in fact is not the aircraft I am extremely curious as to what in my setup might cause the loss of prop rpm control at higher (less dense) altitudes. I have run into this in the past when modifying a naturally aspirated piston aircraft to turbocharged engine in the configuration file, ie take the default Baron and just turbo the engine, you won't be able to lower the prop rpm at higher altitudes whereas Steve Small's turbo Baron cfg file works fine.Anyway, anyone else notice this please pipe up. :)Regards,Zane

"They were worried about the resale values whenever they came to sell which seems to be the thing that holds many back."I was wondering about this myself. I checked out www.aso.com and found two Avantis listed--one for 3+ million and the other for 4+ million. I am curious how that compares to their original purchase price. They seem more expensive than a resale CJ-1 for instance, although the Avanti's resale expense may have something to do with a greater pax load potential.-John

I saw your question in their support forums Zane.I haven't registered on their support forums, since they won't accept either my hotmail or yahoo addresses and they state they can change terms at any time--which challenges my concerns for my privacy. I don't wish to provide my main email address without a guarantee that it won't be used for spam, and their waiver that states "terms and conditions" can be changed when they see fit gives me pause. I noted FSD had no problem accepting my hotmail address when it came to the purchase :)Having said that, I notice very little change in aircraft performance using the prop condition levers when compared to PMDG's 1900d, as an example. But I've still managed to keep prop RPM in the green I recall. I usually climb to only FL280 for most of my Avanti flights, so that may minimize the effect of what I should be seeing. If there is a problem I suspect it could reside in the .air file. I may slave another .air file (since the Avanti's .air file is scrambled to prevent user mods) to the Avanti and see if any of the behavior you've noted changes.-John

Thanks JohnPS. I just noticed on the FSD forum that Joe confirmed the problem and Steve piped in to also confirm he had a fix for it. Curiously the thread was also locked. So thank you Joe and Steve. Would have been happy to thank both of you on the FSD thread I started but it was locked :-hmmm

I am registered over there and I use hotmail. In fact, besides my school account, my hotmail is my only email. I am almost positive I didn't use my college email to register. Hmmmm, strange.Did they change the rules a while back? I think I registered quite a while ago.
