Jeff's PC Meltdown

Featured Replies

Team,

Last night I experienced a catastrophic PC failure.  The waterpump failed, my CPU overheated, and the system will no longer boot. :(    I have started the computer replacement process but it will likely be two to three weeks before I am back in business (hardware wise) and that does not incude rebuilding my FSX software configuration.  Ughh!   Not looking forward to that.

I hope to be operational in time to participate in the race.  Until then, I will have very limited access to the internet and will not be able to participate pre-race preparations this year.

Ughh indeed. I'm sorry to hear that Jeff. I hope you can get it all back up and running before the race.

Bad luck that the CPU was damaged, in my experience they're usually quite good at turning themselves off before any major damage (didn't have my cooler properlty screwed on, but the computer kept running for a few hours with me trying to figure out why the temps were so damn high and the CPU throttled to minimum frequency all the time... :monkey:)

Sorry to hear that Jeff but ya I'm with DC on this, surprised your CPU killed itself, intel CPU's will turn themselves completely off before blowing up.

Hope your back up soon.

Oh no!  Sorry to hear that, Jeff.  Hope you're back up and running again soon without too much pain.

That reminds me to do some maintenance and backing up this weekend too, probably a good thing to do pre-race.

Sad to hear that Jeff. Just a confirmation that I will stick to air cooling on my next Haswell build. Will you be getting a Haswell mobo and processor Jeff?

Ouch!

Good luck with the replacements. Sometimes this is a good excuse...er...reason to upgrade. (Not to look too hard for silver linings that that dark towering cumulonimbus.)

We are all very keen to have you back in time for the big event!

and the system will no longer boot.

Dang Jeff,

Maybe you could stick a stock cooler on the cpu, then try to get into the BIOS and reset to the default settings and see if it posts?

Update. Spoke with tech about the failure and he agreed that the processor probably shutdown when it got too hot and had not cooled enough when I attempted to reboot. He said the typical failure mode for the water loop is the pump. I have a replacement ordered and will replace it. Hope this works so that I don't have to do full fsx build before the race. New computer has been ordered, so I have a backup plan if the repair is unsuccessful.

Ohh that should work out, replace the pump and see if it boots as the processor should be fine, just the cooling isn't working so the computer will not post.

Update #2

Old Computer Status: I replaced the failed water pump last night, recharged the cooling system, and the computer started and seems to be running fine at 4.1ghz overclock. Knock on wood, I am back in business for the race.

My replacement computer should arrive today and I will start building flightsim on it this weekend so I will have a backkup just in case.  I have been looking at an excuse to upgrade my system, my new build:
