February 2, 201412 yr That's right, I'm running a high end system with 16GB's of memory and FSX on a 500GB SSD drive. Yet when I fly into heavy areas like LAX of SFO I always run on of memory. The system says "The simulator has run out of memory and must be restarted" I have had this problem off and on for over a year. I know this topic has been discussed before and I've tried everything involving ram allocation without success. So if anyone could provide some help I would happy and start flying again. Thanks for any suggestions, Walt
February 2, 201412 yr Processor and GPU make a high end system more than memory and hardrive. Besides, they have nothing to do with the OOM message your receiving. You've been bitten by the VAS issue.
February 3, 201412 yr What operating system are you running? Win 7 32, Win 7 64, something else? What LOD settings are you running in FSX? 4.5, 5.5, ?? The simplest fix is to turn down some of your memory intensive FSX settings, like LOD.. You only have at most 4GB of virtual address space to play with, and yes, you can run out.. Bert
February 3, 201412 yr Use FSX and P3D V2 in a modest system, Phenom II X6 2.8ghz, 12gb RAM, 160GB SSD, but use a little extra thing installed in FSX and P3D, only REX Essential, do not have memory problems. But I noticed that Windows 7 64 "borrowed" 12 gb SSD for pagefile.I am satisfied with performance, especially P3D V2 now uses the potential of also modest ATI 6950 2gb.In FSX 737NGX flight with good appearance and good FPS.João Alfredo It is impossible to please Greeks and Trojans É impossivel agradar Gregos e Troianos
February 3, 201412 yr The term computer has run out of available memory is a little misleading. It's actually run out of virtual address space (VAS). If you have a 64bit operating system the limit of FSX's VAS is 4 GB. It has zero to do with your physical memory (RAM). It's because FSX is programmed in 32bit (x86) that the limit is 4 GB (even in a 64bit OS). If you run complex addons with payware you basically need to turn your settings down a little. Definetly get rid of higher LOD settings (anything about 4.5 is higher than default). Video card settings also affect FSX vas limit. But mostly it's LOD and tons of autogen that I've found. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
February 3, 201412 yr Author Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. I have a sandy bridge overclock'd to4.7 windows7/64 and tried to equip it with the most powerful hardware and memory to be able to run FSX with the display setting at maximum (except for clouds,ac shadow, etc) But according to what you're saying, a 64bit system with 16GB of mem is mostly not used. And even though FSX is all loaded into SSD memory, it really doesn't help much with the speed of FSX (accept scenery load time) And ram overflow to SSD does not gain much either. Looks like I'd be just as well off to go back to 4 or 8 GB's of ram and just spread my scenery over 2 or 3 fast hard drives rather than the expense of SSD's. I can certainly lower my LOD,s because I only fly large Airbus A380 and A320 Extended X. Is this TRUE? Under these FSX circumstances what would be the ideal Window7 memory paging and setting? Does letting the System automatically manage paging for FSX and all drives? Even for FSX when windows7 manages the paging, does it not allocate space on the HD as virtual memory to treat as ram? Any help would be appreciated. Walt

I can certainly lower my LOD,s because I only fly large Airbus A380 and A320 Extended X. Is this TRUE? Yes, but why? It's certainly possible to run FSX with decent levels of detail without running into OOM issues. Spanning across multiple storage devices is likely to add its own complications. Cheers! February 3, 201412 yr Paging is not the issue - you are not running out of memory (virtual or real), but address space.. So do not worry about RAM, SSD, hard drives etc.. that is not what is causing you problems! It is the memory "footprint" of FSX and all it's addons, like airplanes and scenery, and airports that overwhelm the ability of Windows and it's limited virtual address space to handle.. Turn down the level of detail and you'll be OK. Bert
February 3, 201412 yr I'd like to add that if you are also running photoscenery such as the Megascenery stuff those can and will eat into your available memory/VAS. Turn off memory-intensive scenery in your scenery library, especially if you are flying to and from places that have nothing to do with the photoscenery areas. Having all of them enabled will force the sim to load them even if you will not overfly those areas, so what is the point of having them enabled. Yes, it is a pain having to turn scenery areas on and off but we have to learn to live with it. FSX is a fickle beast and needs a LOT of TLC to run properly. February 3, 201412 yr Also, if not already, try using DX10, check out the DX10 forum. Steve Parsons DX10 fixer "highly" recommended. Like having a new sim!
