Dx10 Fixer,Orbx Global & Cooling Towers Effects

Recommended Posts

hello all-

While flying around Paris today, I noticed a black box flicker on the base of the cooling towers of the power station outside the city. There was no smoke or steam- I am not sure if there is suppose to be any. When I got up close the flickering stopped but again I saw no effects.

I tried to replace all the steam effects from the dx10 fixer backup folder to fsx and still had the same issues.

Is there a problem with steam or smoke ? Is there any other locations that I can test?

Thanks in advance.

I forgot to mention that I have the DX10 fixer slider to the full left for scenery compatibility if that makes any difference.

I ran some flights around these two stacks, both in DX9 and DX10, and saw no evidence of black boxes flickering, nor any steam rising. Now - the Fixer version I have may have fixed the black box flickering, but if there's no steam when using DX9, there probably isn't any in DX10, either.

Thanks for checking Paul. I have the latest version from the store downloaded and installed. Are you running a pre-release ? I have never looked back at DX9 since I got the fixer ! I was curious if the smoke or steam working in dx10 and was hoping to hear of another location to test. Maybe I'll just check out the nuclear power plants like Three Mile Island

Are you running a pre-release ?

Yes I am.

There are many fixes coming,I just ask that you be somewhat patient, and by all means - keep noting down any odd-ball issues which you see happening on any FSX object.

All the best,

pj

Very happy to be patient :P  - It's only taken 7 years to run FSX in DX10.

Is there a formal way to report visual anomalies? I found one or two other small issues that no one else has reported when I researched a solution.

Thanks again Paul and Steve - great work!!!.

Well it looks like there is no steam here as well. Funny enough, I did find an interesting FSX add-on with effects for the steam and smoke of the power plants along with adding wind turbines, etc. It's called "Power Plan Project v4.2"  by Ray Porter.  http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/topic/11475-fsx-power-project-42/%C2'>

Does anyone else have any experience with it?

Cheers -

Daniel

I noticed a black box flicker on the base of the cooling towers of the power station outside the city.

Out of curiosity, did you notice any difference between the flicker from inside the cockpit versus an exterior view? I tried this just now and noticed that I got the black box flicker mainly while viewing the towers through the cockpit glass. Viewed from outside, at the same zoom level, the flicker mostly disappeared (MUCH reduced). What's up with that? (The aircraft was my Milviz T-38.)

Edited to add: occurred exactly the same in a couple of other aircraft I tried. Flicker was much reduced when viewing from outside and disappeared all together further away from the towers then compared to the VC view.

I have pretty much the same flicker of a black box at the base of these cooling towers whether inside our outside the cockpit. I am flying the Carenado Cessna 337.

: odourboy - You are on to something. I retested and it does appear much worse while looking though the windscreen.

Hi Paul -

Finally loaded them up. I still had the same issue with the black box shimmer on the cooling towers outside of Paris and no steam. Not sure if  there is any or if any was ever added.

I loaded up the "Power Project 4.2" and reran the DX10 fixer to update the effects. So far everything looks good in DX-10 in my limited testing. Need some more night testing.

The US default towers have added the steam effect along with many others worldwide. Three Mile Island, Berwick, looked good. The one issue is frames - they drop pretty big when facing the steam.  Not sure why. The wind farms and dishes look good to so far as I can see. Not sure if it's a "DX-10" thing.

The author of the package, Ray Porter was kind enough to email me back on my questions about DX-10 compatibility. He just heard about the DX10 fixer last week and he has incentive in making all his models work under DX-10. He said he previously ran DX10 with the fixer but had issues with his obstruction light effects not showing up at night. Not sure what this means because I saw flashing red lights on the wind turbines at night.
