Well this is turning into a little better than I had hoped. Now if I can just quit touching the wrong button. I clicked solved and in most things I think it is. But I am not sure I was quite through. I have to go get the software and I get it into FSX. Any way I mat need to start a new topic since I clicked solved.

The topic isn't locked... I don't know if it will auto lock it though.

I also didn't know there was a button for solved, lol

I think he will be moving up into larger and larger planes. He just called tonight and he is almost through with personal training. So I think he moves from single to twin prop then I am not sure I think jets. Then I have no clue bigger I'm sure. But I do not know how far this training will go. I assume at least up to below commercial airlines. I will ask him though. They train all the way up to the big planes I think. That's a very good question. I know he shot through this portion like lightning. And I think he has one to two years left.

Well I had to get to bed earlier than I have lately and jumped on the tablet. And before I knew I had hit it. This tablet stuff is for the birds. Small convenient but trimmed down in function.

Ok he says up to Lear jets and king airs at this school. I guess as he goes faster and bigger I will move his planes up to get what he is using.

I did fix the solved thing. His I think is solved but once I start the FTX for mine I might need more help. I was trying to finish it so I could drive up to see him this weekend and let him test it out. May or may not make that though. Is it a long process configuring everything? FSX simple but this is the finesse and I am sure that might take a little bit of time.

Cool, a very important addon that I don't believe was discussed was Ground Services X. In the future, when he is ready to start training for commercial airliners (assuming he will move to a different school to train for the large aircraft) , this is a must addon.. I'm sure you've heard of it. If not, it's basically an addon that when an aircraft is parked at a gate, the pilot can call up catering services, passenger boarding, gas refuel, REAL pushbacks (FSX default pushback is pretty bad), passenger baggage services, and more. I believe this plays a big part in realism.

The software is made by FSDreamteam.. Abbreviated GSX

I might throw that in the mix if it can be turned off until he is ready. I have always done his computers he just flies. I don't guess there are war planes like combat FS that work well now days is there? My two favorite planes are the A10 and Harrier, unless it's old prop planes PBY Catalina and biplanes.... There are too many I like in props.

If you get the acceleration expansion pack, they've got fighter planes, I don't have it though. Maybe you can try PREPAR3D.... I don't know much about it, but since Lockheed Martin developed it, it should be specially made for military fighter jets. But there's fighter jet aircraft for both FSX and PREPAR3D. Don't rely on me for answers about PREPAR3D or combat lol, I've never actually flown one lol.

How old is your son and how soon will he be enrolling in a flight school? Your best source of information will be the flight school he attends and especially his CFI. You really can't self teach yourself to fly and the more you try the more you'll reinforce bad habits. As you can expect, bad habits and aviation don't mix.

If you want to use FSX as a hobby by all means dress it up and invest in some realistic aircraft, as an adjunct to an actual course of study tread lightly and consult the professionals who will properly guide your son in his progress as a real life aviator.

Don't get me wrong, FSX is a useful in a rigorous training environment. How useful and where it should be applied are really the province of his potential flight instructor.

Good luck to your son.

Thank you very much. He is 21 and in school. That was what I was trying avoid was the bad habits. But his flight instructor told him in the air he had not had anyone for a first flight do that well. Let me say though he has flown sims since he was at least 7. I have always tried to make them as realistic as the time period would allow. On top of that his uncle lets him fly with him a bit here and there no take offs and landings but air where it's safe. So he has some actual experience not much. But I don't know now if I should keep it here so he does not pick up bad habits until he is more well versed with his instructor. I do not want to get him off on the wrong foot. I have tried to get him in two colleges and he has hated it. But he is excelling in flight school. I will hold off on delivery for a few more weeks. He has also gotten to fly with another uncle when he was still training the F-16 or F-18 pilots in the Air Force. My grandfather used to fly and another uncle used to fly also. I think it's time for me to go to school. Thank you RickB1293.

Actually, I self-taught myself a large part of flying the commercial aircrafts, never had bad habits, don't know where you got that from, of course I still had to go to flight school, obviously I never really learned every single thing by self teaching, flight school finished it off for me really. But of course, this is not the case for everyone.

I have to say however this does come with some risk, as there were some issues I was, well, corrected on.

I agree, it is best to wait according to what his flight instructor says, so you can see what is really necessary for his flight training.

Well I think this is going to be pretty interesting to see how all this turns out even if he does not get to use it until he finishes school. I can still fly and learn take offs and landings. I am no good at that at all. Is there anything to help learn landings? Take off no problem flying no problem landing I can do it but not well.

It sounds like your family will be a great source of support to your son. I wouldn't be too worried about the college stuff. My son hated school until he joined the Navy and they sent him. He just retired after twenty plus years in the SEALS and intel community. (He'd probably shoot me if he new I was talking!) wish your son we'll for me, I enjoyed every minute of my career, seven years as a Naval Aviator.

Ha ha ha I won't tell but that's because one I love my country and two I support our troops. The third is I was taught to hunt by UDT!! My third grandfather was a little tough on the deer skills.

What about mesh what ever forms the better mountains and valleys.

FS global 2010 mesh is great except it can mess up airports that have elevation changes in there runways. Where the airport will appear on a platform of sorts. This can be fixed somehow I think but I am not sure. If you don't use a mesh program the mountains and stuff still look ok but FS global 2010 really makes mountains and especially airports that are in between mountain areas or surrounded by mountains just awesome.

Is it a long process configuring everything?

There are tweaking guides out there that discuss how to optimize FSX for different system configurations they are quite easy to follow.

Yeah, some people don't seem to care about our troops, they just don't know what they do for us.

Heh, I remember back then maybe um... 20 years ago. I was 12, and I had told my parents I wanted to be a pilot. My whole family had a history of medicine.. They were disappointed the trend wouldn't continue, said sorry, I don't like medicine, it's just not for me.

Here I am.. 20 years later with a family and a home... Damn time "flies".

So you are a pilot Dickens? Lucky boy smart to make your own decision. I was a little concerned asking the questions I needed answered. Thinking I would get brushed off. I wish I had gotten on and asked more questions several years ago. But there was a lot more code writing then. I am going to get back tomorrow or Saturday and let you all know how it goes.
