How to get rid of cockpit fan noise?

Featured Replies

I suddenly realised that out of the blue I now have cockpit recirc fans buzzing in my 737-200. I have not modified the SOUND files for this a/c at any level that I am aware of. The recirc fans continue to buzz even if I press "Q" or "P" (!!) I cannot turn off the chirping-buzzing sound while any 737-200 is loaded. It drives me nuts. What would cause this to happen? Could it be a GAUGE file from another a/c I installed? How do I figure this out and fix it?Appreciate help, thanks!JS

Jonathon,The answer to your question is yes, it could be a gauge you added. I just checked my own xml sound gauge and it is guilty of the same thing... It won't be after the next release. As to finding the gauge - are there switches for the APU or Air Conditioner? They strike me as the most likely candidates. Try commenting out said switches from the panel.cfgDoug

Hey, Doug:Hi, thanks for reply. Stay with me a bit if you can...The panel cfg has some "Dummy" switches and the Recirc fans have two of those dummy switches. They are not clickable and when I mouse over them, there is no MS "hand" as with other overhead panel switches.I am entirely baffled that the fan noise persists when even in Q and P keystroke mode. How is such annoyance possible? I'd mind less if the noise would quit in P or Q mode because the engine turbine whine eventually drowns out the constant whirring. How does the XML stuff come into this? I've never understood XML files. Here's the overhead cfg section:[Window01]file=Overhead.bmp file_1024=Overhead.bmp size_mm=1024window_size_ratio=1.00 position=0visible=0ident=THROTTLE_PANELwindow_size= 1.000, 1.000window_pos= 0.000, 0.000gauge00=rp733!hydraulic, 685,320,178,124gauge01=rp733!fuel_boost, 264,442,171,249gauge02=rp733!anti_ice, 684,210,178,85gauge03=ca734cabinair, 866,44,70,73gauge04=ca734epr, 700,530,108,100gauge05=ML-ARJFS2K.Brakepressure, 967,527,38,37gauge06=MS.Volts_Warn, 987,452,23,39gauge07=Clock, 861,580,92,90gauge08=fpda_apu_start, 555,700,34,54gauge09=CONCORDE!Generator2-Switch, 532,577,26,36gauge10=CONCORDE!Engine2-Ignition-Switch, 562,577,26,36gauge11=CONCORDE!Engine1-Ignition-Switch, 452,577,26,36gauge12=CONCORDE!Generator1-Switch, 482,577,26,36gauge13=st_carp707_tat, 456,632,60,51gauge14=737-400!AT Lim, 504, 559 ,30,12gauge15=737-400!Low Oil Left, 447,528,30,15gauge16=737-400!Low Oil Right, 561,529,30,15gauge17=737-400!Reverser Unlocked Left, 447,558,30,15gauge18=737-400!Reverser Unlocked Right, 561,558,30,15gauge19=737-400!Start Valve Left, 447,543,30,15gauge20=737-400!Start Valve Right, 561,543,30,15gauge21=MD11.WINDSPEED, 893,527,47,13gauge22=AS350_switches!Avionics_Switch, 516,176,26,16gauge23=AS350_switches!Lamp_Test, 967,414,30,17gauge24=AS350_switches!Fuel_Pump, 501,454,30,16gauge25=AS350_switches!Fuel_Pump, 549,345,30,15gauge26=AS350_switches!Fuel_Pump, 450,346,31,15gauge27=AS350_switches!Dummy_Switch1, 615,581,30,14gauge28=AS350_switches!Landing_Lights, 898,430,30,17gauge29=AS350_switches!Dummy_Switch1, 646,372,29,15gauge30=AS350_switches!Master_Battery, 361,179,30,15gauge31=AS350_switches!Master_Battery, 499,330,30,17gauge32=AS350_switches!Nav_Lights, 967,399,30,17gauge33=AS350_switches!Panel_Lights, 898,398,30,17gauge34=AS350_switches!Pitot_Heat, 613,439,15,30gauge35=AS350_switches!Strobe_Lights, 898,414,30,17gauge36=AS350_switches!Landing_Lights, 916,493,30,15gauge37=AS350_switches!Pitot_Heat, 979,493,30,15gauge38=AS350_switches!Dummy_Switch1, 485,177,26,16gauge39=RKG_fuelstat!FuelStatusSq_turbine_spd, 450,86,124,74gauge40=737-400!Throttle Display Toggle, 286,692,18,16gauge41=CFR_Fuel_Low_Right_Main, 806,13,27,14gauge42=CFR_Fuel_Low_Left_Main, 704,13,27,14gauge43=CFR_Fuel_Low_Centre, 737,13,27,14gauge44=mooney_bravo!Master Alt Bat, 450,268,32,52gauge45=mooney_bravo!Avionics Switch, 369,8,32,52gauge46=concorde!Yaw-Dump-Button, 295,212,30,17gauge47=AS350_switches!Master_Battery, 455,177,26,16gauge48=AS350_switches!Landing_Lights, 946,493,30,15gauge49=AS350_switches!Landing_Lights, 886,494,30,15gauge50=AS350_switches!Dummy_Switch1, 933,161,28,17gauge51=AS350_switches!Dummy_Switch1, 981,161,28,17gauge52=AS350_switches!Dummy_Switch1, 882,161,28,17gauge53=AS350_switches!Dummy_Switch1, 616,372,28,15gauge54=AS350_switches!Dummy_Switch1, 629,289,28,15gauge55=rp727_2!ff_1, 920,296,55,57gauge56=rp733_lights_capt, 355,692,183,50gauge57=rp733_lights_fo, 781,692,150,56gauge58=rp733_pitot, 706,90,128,62gauge59=737-400!Low Oil Right, 311,92,31,18gauge60=737-400!Low Oil Left, 281,92,31,18gauge61=AS350_switches!Landing_Lights, 967,430,30,17gauge62=CFR_Fuel_Low_Centre, 774,13,27,14gauge63=700SIGNS, 599,477,96,57gauge64=717_DFD_Ice_Warning, 461,617,32,14gauge65=737-400!Engine Start Left, 598,708,65,42gauge66=737-400!Engine Start Right, 711,708,65,42gauge67=737-400!Fuel Crossfeed, 657,707,56,43gauge68=rp733_yaw_damp, 264,319,170,71gauge69=AM_ACAmps1, 723,631,63,54gauge70=rp727_2!fire_1, 448,386,37,58gauge71=rp727_2!fire_2, 548,386,37,58I've searched for anything on the MAIN panel but nothing stands out. JS,Try commenting out the cabinair gauge. Not sure if that is really the one. Alternatively you can move all the sound files to a temporary directory. Add back the obviously good ones and then slowly add back unknown ones till you find the bogey. (or listen to them with media player to spot the suspect). Bill G KSAT

Which panel are you using? If it's the Tinmouse 737 you may be hearing the standby altimeter vibrator, which is supposed to be there.Leon

Gentlemen:I am using the lovely Luis da Costa Pereira panels (I use all of his for freeware 737 models--the 200, 300, and 400). The -200 is especially neat with a real "old fashioned" AP.I shall try as you suggest. Last night I did actually shift all gauges out and just added in the SOUND.cfg and blow me down if I didn't already hear a whirring of fans when that alone was in the SOUND file for the -200 ! That was so bizarre.Anyway, I shall experiment further. Thanks.JS

Well, it ain't the cabin air gauge from what I can see.I shifted all sound files out with the intention of placing them back one-by-one into the -200 (and the -300 which has the same panel, updated for the -300, and same whirring noises). Since I knew I needed the SOUND.cfg file in the SOUND folder for the -200, I stuck it in. The just for the heck of it, I loaded the -200 and I had the whirring noise right away even though I had NO wav files in that sound folder! It is a persistent whirring noise. It remains on all the time as long as the -200 is loaded on the screen. Even when I press Q or P and minmize the sim, the sound persists.Through JAB 2000, my excellent and trusty panel manager, I temporarily assigned sounds from another Boeing aircraft to the -200 and I got the same persistent whirring overlaying the jet engine sounds. This is very weird and so very FS! Any further suggestions appreciated, thanks.JS

Hi,Could you please post the contents of the sound.cfg. I have had sounds as you describe and the cfg file referenced a wav file that was located in the fs9sound folder. Thanks,Ed

Ed:Here is the SOUND .cfg file for your analysis and review, etc. Thanks for any advice or assistance!By the way, IU swapped the cockpit panel for a 707-320 panel and kept the association with this SOUND file and the sounds were completely normal with no whirring. I therefore figured that this would have to be a PANEL gauge issue but what do I know?! Thanks in advance for any help:/// Sound CFG for 737-200 Aerol

Hi,After checking the sound.cfg file and also the zip file in the library,I can't see any association with a wav file in the sound folder. As someone mentioned, it could be built into a gauge. Could you please tell me the name of the panel and where you downloaded it from? I'll work on it and see if I can find a solution. Thanks,Ed

It is definetly in a gauge file. If it was in the sound folder it would be affected by the "Q". The reason it is not controlled by FS "Q" is that it uses DirectX through the gauge system. About the only way I can think of to get rid of it is to use something like "reshacker" to find and get access to the wav, then lower the volume of it to silence, then save the gauge. !!The wav file must remain and be the exact same size in bytes!! Ed:You're not gonna believe this but it's a cockpit I cannot find any more. It was the 737-200 by Luis da Costa Pereira and originally he uploaded a zillion 737 files on flightsim.com in bits and pieces and with fixes. There was a -200 zip file and a -222 zip file that he made but I believe neither one contained the classic AP (with "paddles" on the MCP) I use in it which was yet another upload that I don't think I have in my archives (which are huge) or at flightsim.comThe cockpit has worked flawlessly for 1-2 years for me and it's only last night when I used it that I realized I had this infernal noise! I figured it might have been affected by the installation of an unrelated cockpit panel that uses gauges also used by the Pereira panel and I might have over-written a gauge file used by the -200 panel in installing a more recent cockpit for another type of aircraft--like the 707-320.However, if you wish, I can email you the zip files I do have for this -200 panel and you can tackle it any way you see fit.My email is [email protected] for your kind offer and review so far.JS
