Cloud Texture software Options

Featured Replies

Now that I have got my scenery needs met for P3d version 2.3 I am trying to choose a cloud texture product along with a direct weather engine for version 2.3 of P3d. My understanding is there are presently three weathe engines available or in development. These are FS Global Real Weather, Opus FSX, Active Sky Next and Active Sky 2012. It is my understanding that the first three require separate software for the cloud textures if you want other than default textures from P3d. Active Sky 2012 has its own cloud textures. I want recommendations on a cloud texture software to use with one of the three direct weather engines. I find two choices available;  REX4 Direct and FS Environment X. Are there others? What do you think is the best? I haven't found much in the way of comments or reviews of cloud textures. I have found positive reviews on ground textures for Rex4 direct. Thanks.

The following is strictly IMHO:  I don't believe AS2012 is compatible with P3D as a wx engine and I have to say that having used 2012 in FSX and ASN in P3D that ASN is a vastly improved wx engine.  However it does not provide texture sets.  I use REX4 for textures (REX4 provides much more that just cloud textures) and am well satisfied.

I cannot speak to the other products.  I do note that in general everyone swears by the products they are using and tend to swear at the others.  To some extent it's a "pay your money and take your chance" proposition.  In general I believe you will satisfied with any reputable product.

Thanks. I plan on testing all three weather engines once REXs weather engine is available. I have rex4 direct and use it primarily for ground textures. I dod find one comment about a preference for FS environment over rex for clouds as the user felt vex was more realistic. But it is fairly old software. And I read in opus website a recommendation for FEX for clouds but didn't mention Rex for clouds which kinda surprised me. But thanks for the comments.

I'm currently right with the question : "Should I re-install REX 4 TEXTURE DIRECT" with my 2.3 ?

I bought REX4 TEXTURE DIRECT when I was using 2.1 and 2.2 to enhance ground/airport texture but really didn't enjoy what I pick for clouds texture. It may be that they'are too much choice and pick this one instead of this one is a long process of testing. REX4 TD missed a hall of fame or Top XX.

Maybe will I re-inject only ground textures from REX4 to my P3D 2.3 but so far included P3D 2.3 cloud textures fullfill my needs.

PS : no question about Active Sky Next ;-) I'm a pleased customer and the three days waiting for the SP1 (to be compatible with 2.3) was awfull ;-)

That should be rex instead of vex

FEX is very very very old and may not even work in P3D without resorting to sorcery.

In fact Flight1's EULA will probably forbid it anyway.

Go for REX Direct 4.

It is optimised for P3D v2 DX11/HDR and has a very neat "install a texture theme based on weather at an ICAO" option.

The RD4 manual also has some very useful advice on setting up P3D for best visuals.

AS2012 is of course compatible to P3D v2.3 and works very well. I've REX HD OD, AS2012 and ASN and all of them work well with P3D v2.3. My favourite is ASN SP1.

Oh yes, let us not forget F1 and their EULA's.  Truthfully, I always thought FEX did  better clouds & water than REX, but they have, at this point at least, no intention of joining the modern world.  Perhaps when F1 loses enough sales....

I use REX 4 Texture Direct with ASN and am happy so far, weather depictions I have seen have been very accurate.

Save money and get the FREE HDE V2 textures available here on AVSIM. IMO the most realistic looking cloud set.
