hello i was wonder which upgrade would benefit my fsx performance right now I'am running a

GPU: GTX 650 ti boost 2gb

 

should i upgrade to an i7 4th gen or a GTX 780

IMNSHO, the i7 will be of more help than a video card swap.  -  Doug

I assume you're running the i5 at stock speeds since you didn't list an overclock?  The mantra is CPU for FSX.  If you go for an i7 I'd look at the 4790k (top of that line).  It is a 4.0-4.4GHz (non-turbo to turbo), so you will increase your processor speed and expected FSX performance gains.  I don't know if I can really quantify what type of gain you should expect, but I think that is your best bang for the money.

 

Remember, while the primary factor for FSX is GHz, generally speaking i7>i5>i3 and later generation i7 are better than earlier one's due to some gains in bus speed, northbridge chips, etc.  So even the 4690k may give you a small improvement over your i5 even though it's about the same GHz...I doubt that gain would be enough to justify the money though.

 

As for the video card, do not get the 780.  The 980 has been released.  It effectively replaces the 780 for about the same cost, but performs better.  As to how much help to expect, it depends.  Graphics cards can help FSX, but only in certain circumstances.  One is certain circumstances like heavy clouds often have less cost with more GPU muscle.  The other key is if you have, or are willing to, move towards DX10 preview mode-which is much less broken with SteveFX's freeware shaders or payware DX10 Fixer.  Combined with bufferpools and DX10, you can make some progress to offloading CPU work to the GPU.  FSX is still CPU dependent, but you can get some improvement. 

 

Largely, I would say it depends on your budget and what you're looking for. 

1. Very tight budget - maybe try overclocking your current CPU.  You can get gains by moving to an i7 4790k, but it'll cost you about $300-350

2. Have some money, but the stuff sure doesn't grow on trees - think about a 4790k

3. Ok, so I have a money tree - 4790k and a 970/980.  If all you do is FSX, the 970 is probably more than sufficient.  If you do other games, think about the 980.

OC your CPU to 4.5 and add an Asus GTX 970 and you're good to go.

 

If you choose to upgrade your CPU, go with the i7 4790K and OC to 4.5.

 

I will assume that you want the most value for your money and that you want to run addons such as FTX and high quality airports with some AI.

A 650? A video card would be a way better upgrade. Overclock that CPU as well.

Best value-over lock your CPU. If you need to pick one though, I think CPU over GPU for FSX. I don't think your gains will be dramatic with either and minimally better than overclocking alone. Your GPU by modern game standards is poor, but FSX is not a modern game and heavily CPU dependent. Gains from GPU are real, but limited.

I have a 3570k OC'd to 4.3 that used to be coupled with a 1.5g 580 and I swapped in a 4g 770. The difference was night and day.

In your situation, the GTX 970. Asus or MSI is what you should buy.

You want a good CPU cooler and OC CPU to 4 or higher.

A 650 is a Best Buy "gaming" card... (Sarcastic for piece of junk) You already have a nice system... You'll only bottleneck it worse with a faster CPU and the same video card.

 

A 780 is a huge difference faster than your current rig.

 

If you're running any modern day resolution do the GPU upgrade. Buy a 30 buck cooler and OC your current processor to 4gh - 4.4 ghz
