P3D Elevation Mesh - Pennsylvania ?

Featured Replies

Does anyone make a creditable mesh for the state of Pennsylvania. It seems that all the mesh I see is partially global in that it covers a region and is price in the $70 area.

I use the FSGenesis products and have not seen any issues in the Pennsylvania area.

...or you could do what I did 10 years ago, and that is to take the shuttle SRTM data for Pennsylvania as I did for Kentucky, and convert it into a.BGL mesh File… Just saying...relatively painless and about as accurate as you're going to get… And free!

If you got time, forego the stuff you have to pay for and learn how to create your own stuff.  3m mesh, 2 meter mesh, 1 meter mesh, 1 foot mesh, mesh mesh mesh.. more mesh than you can shake a stick at.

You can also download a variety stuff using the nationalmap viewer:

Right now I'm using 3 meter mesh for Vermont.. all free.

Any chance of a quick tutorial to create mesh?

There's all kinds of tutorials.  But the basic idea is to download a DEM format mesh (easiest if they come in GeoTiff format), create a notepad .inf file:

[source]
Type = GeoTIFF
Layer = Elevation
SourceDir = "c:\DEM"  (where the downloaded DEM file resides)
SourceFile = "mesh_file_name.tif"
MinValidValue = 0 (minimum altitude in the mesh)

[Destination]
DestDir = "whatever_directory_you_want_it _to_save_to"
DestBaseFilename = "name_the_converted_file"
DestFileType = BGL
LOD = Auto

Plop that onto your resmaple.exe file (part of the free Prepar3d SDK download).

And then the resultant .bgl file goes into the "scenery" folder.  If using photoscenery then it goes into the scenery folder with all the image bgl's.

If the DEM mesh file comes in an ERDAS IMG format, or other, then you'll have to convert it to a GeoTiff for resample to use.  Needs to be in WGS long/lat format also.

Excellent!

Thank you...exactly what I was after!

If you don't mind 10m resolution, you can use something that has already been done and it is free:

This covers part of western USA:

I am pretty sure, there are other parts of US covered too.

This looks like a good solution. The free download time is 2 days and my Flash Get download manager does not work with the site. An alternative is to spend $5.00US. Quite reasonable, but the site is asking for my PayPal password instead of sending its transaction info to PayPal and having it ask for the password. The exposure is too high for major problems thus I have to pass.

Try googling "free fsx mesh". There is other download source for sure. And it will be free.

Maybe you could try this site:

www.simviation.com/fsx_terrainmesh.htm

I don't know if it works, because I am at work and some of urls are banned.
