2 or 4 modules of RAM

Featured Replies

Hi All,

This may be a stupid question, but is there any difference between having 4x4GB or 2x8GB modules of RAM?

Thanks in advance.

Rob

It is depending on if you want to add more memory. So i would use 2x8GB and add more in the future.

Heya Rob,

In memory intensive, memory test workloads like STREAM you would see that 4x4 is faster than 2x8.

However, for 99-percent of real-world apps you would be hard pressed to isolate the difference, typically around 1-2 percent at most.

Used to be preferred to fill only two banks of ram.  Sometimes there was reliability issues when the second banks were used.  Out of habit I still only use two sticks.

I lean towards two, with four, space between the banks becomes very limited, with only two there is more space for air flow.  Just a thought.

Thanks all, I think I'll go with 2, which always leaves open the chance to expand if required in the future.
