GTX 960 upgrade has down graded performance

Featured Replies

No, that will break the Sim beyond repair, FSX will never be able to compile its shaders if you do that.

What the OP should have done is :

1: delete the shader files in C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\FSX\ and delete the FSX.cfg

Thank you for the correction, this was actually what I meant but my writing was not clear enough.

Greetings, Chris

Yep. I confirmed with Nvidia drivers are up to date.  Got all the old AMD drivers out with a utility called Driver sweeper, recommended by in this thread. I'll sleep on it. Take a look at Bios settings tomorrow. Thanks again,

Cheers,

Brian

Not sure if already mentioned, but have you checked your "Power management mode" is set to "Prefer maximum performance" in NI or NCP?

I would run with HT off and Affinity of 14. Reduces CPU temp and if able to overclock, you can reach higher speeds.

Really deleting the shaders folder is ill advised? I have done it after each gfx driver update and never had a problem and I run a 780gtx.

Still sounds like a driver conflict to me.

Try this driver remover, super easy to use.

Make sure you take the "Reboot in Safe Mode" option.

I suggest running it twice, first to remove any old AMD files then again to remove your latest nvidia driver. Then reinstall the nvidia driver.

Thanks. I just followed this process with the DDU tool. Removed all Nvidia, then Radeon, then reinstalled latest Nvidia Driver 350.12. Same results.

Where in this process ( when switching GPU's) should the FSX shader folder be deleted? That I didn't do. Of course 10 different people, 10 different answers. But, I'm listening. Does the shader folder rebuild when you start FSX, much like the FSX.CFG does? I've already tired a fresh CFG. No different results.

Yes the shader rebuilds, but I would hold off doing that until somebody can verify my question above.

Angelo, did you delete the shader folder after you installed the drivers for your new card? To be on the safe side, how about just taking the shader folder out and keeping it on the desk top. If all fails, put it back in?

Yes no problem with deleting the shaders.

They rebuild just like the cfg.

OK, so here's what I've now done. Still nothing is working. Before I get a replacement card or do a complete reinstall, does anyone have any other ideas?

1) Uninstalled both Radeon and Nvidia drivers with DDU tool. Reinstalled latest Nvidia driver for the 960 ( 350.12)

2) Stress tested the card- passed

3) Tried all setting recommendations from Nvidia ( customer support via phone) and guys here in the forum, both CP and NI.

4) Ran a complete hardware diagnostic (8 hours) - all hardware passed

5) Deleted FSX. CFG - tried no tweaks, then a few- same result

6) Checked for latest Bios updates, Latest one issued was before I bought the MB.

What I haven't done- delete shaders folder and let FSX reinstall

reset Bios to defaults.

With default C172 at a default FSX airport, no weather engine, no AI, Autogen set to dense, 60 FPS. Then once the 172 starts rolling, sporadically jumps from 60 to single digits,  and anywhere in between, drops to single digits on occasion thereafter. Completely choppy the whole way through. Limited ( 30 fps) unlimited - same results.

Does a fresh shaders file after a GPU( from different manufacturers) swap really make a difference.

Time to get a replacement card? Reinstall?  Anyone?

best,

Brian

If your getting random drops to single digits its clearly a Sim issue ( Ive had them) so no need to return your card just yet.

You may want to try and isolate your add ons one by one and see if there is a conflict first and then a full reinstall if rebuilding your cfg didn't work ( that worked for me)

Thanks Zoran, getting random single digits and spikes with default scenery, default c172 and default airports, no add on. Again, performance with the Radeon 6800 1 GB was around 20 fps with FSdreamteam airports, weather 40% AI ,PMDG 737. Never dips into single digits and very smooth. Don't think its add ons.

Would someone like to comment on Shaders with new card. Hesitant to delete it

Brian Green

You sure have a conflict somewhere. I cant see anyway around a reinstall to rule out the sim

Cant see how a card could cause a conflict of that nature. I feel for you though, not a good situation

DX9 shaders: "C:\Users\Brian\AppData\Local\Microsoft\FSX\Shaders"

You can safely rename that folder Brian, when FSX Starts up it will recreate it. There's a possibility that the differences in card capabilities generate a difference somewhere in the shaders. Can but try it.

Tried a fresh shaders folder. Same old, same old. Replacement card is easier than a reinstall. I think that's where I'm headed.

If I get a new computer for FS I'm going to let Jetline Systems build it and maintain it.  Great outfit from what I understand. They're about 1/3 more costly than doing it yourself but that cost is justified and more than makes up for itself when dealing with garbage like this. Plus you get FSX experts ( unlike myself) to launch, test, and keep your system running well as it should be.

Important to ask yourself if the enjoyment from this hobby is really worth the cost, time and headache. For me, I'm really wondering, leaning toward the side of " no, it's not worth it"

Thinking outside the box, when was the last time you defraged that hard disk?

So you Hyper Threading off, whats your CPU speed? Is it hardset or do you have Intel Speed Step enabled?

Post your FSX.cfg and I am curious to see what under the "MAIN" category was shows for "ProcSpeed."

FPS is set to unlimited, turn Vsync off, try another output on your gfx card, DVI or HDMI what have you. I am trying to think of more things to check.

Is the PSU delivering enough power to the system?
