Ultimate Terrian - Convince Me!

They make a huge difference, Petteri. Flight Simming has taken a big step forward.Tony

I just bought it this weekend and there are some pros and cons, but overall I really like the product. Pros:-Daytime populated areas look amazing. The roads and populated areas match up very well-Nighttime looks spectacular. I prefer flying at night, and cities just look awesome. The screenshots just don't do it justice.-Accurate coastlines and water are obviously a big feature and are very nice. It is also nice that the roads match up with the water much better now. With USA Roads the roads would of course often cut across water rather than going around, due to the imporper location of the water. -Golf courses! As golf is one of my other hobbies, I really enjoy seeing my local courses while flying VFR around my hometown. Golf courses are really easy to spot from the air in real life, and now they can be seen in Flightsim as well. -Railroads. Usa Roads did not include railroads (although other addons had them), so this was a nice new feature for me. Rail lines are another important VFR landmark on many charts. Cons:-Landclass away from populated areas is mostly default. There is a fix in the works which will let us use the FS Genesis landclass with the UT USA landclass, so that we can get the best of both worlds. -Blurry textures. While flying, especially when using time compression, you can get blurry textures quite often. I haven't tried tweaking these out yet, but there are many fixes suggested in the forum. -Just as USA Roads showed the inaccurate location of many default FS objects, UT USA does the same. It is not uncommon to find streams cutting through the middle of small airports. The good news is that this does not seem to cause a problem landing at the airport, but it still looks a little odd. -Lights can appear above the ground. Another issue which has been discussed in the support forums. It isn't really a big deal, but seeing lights elevated is a little distracting, especially from the ground. (this feature can be turned off, but the lights look spectacular from the air, so I leave it on and deal with this issue). -Bridges in wrong places/often over land. This of course goes back to the initial issue of default objects being wrong in FS. Once you throw in proper coastlines, things can misalign. There is an option to turn off all bridges and just let the roads cross in their correct place. -Overall - it sounds like I have more cons than pros, but overall I feel the product is great, but of course it does have limitations. For me, the features overshadow the issues. VFR flying is greatly improved, and the visuals around populated areas are excellent. After flying around the USA product, I am strongly considering the Alaska/Canada version as well!

Nice, balanced, accurate review Craig. I agree with all your points, though I don't have much blurring problem. I would subjectively say the pro's way outweigh the con's for me. I give it a perfect 10 on the overall increase in enjoyment it has given me.Tony

I bought and have no regrets. If you have usa roads, as the docs point out, you will probably want to disable it and use the road system on UT. I also have Genesis Land Class...and on the flight1 forum at simflight there are instructions which say gls must be layered atop UT. There are also some issues with many other add ons...including much of Holger Sandmann's remarkable freeware and payware. But, Holger says on the UT forum he is working to patch his sceneries to make them compatible.btw, even with usa roads I could not actually find the street where I live. with UT, thanks largely to the accurate ralroads, I simply tracked the metra line which passes my neighborhood community and tracked my street and its intersection...rather cool, if I do say so.btw, if you have usa roads, you'll get a discount which makes UT only $25...not a bad deal considering what it is, and the work being done to work out bugs as they are reported to the developers by users. I was a bit hesitant to purchase it myelf. I have FSGenesis Landclass and several other VFR add-ons. I bought Alaska/Canada over the weekend, and USA a couple of days ago.The product is really exceptional. My primary wish for VFR flying has been accurate coastlines, and I've finally got them (as close as we can get in FS9, anyway). This solves issues such as the huge cliffs along the puget sound when using FSGenesis mesh. Because the FS9 coastline was not accurate, there was an abrupt transition between mesh and water. With UT-USA, the transition is more natural (except where there actually should be cliffs). The landclass around my usual flying area (Seattle/Tacoma) seems more up-to-date than the FSGenesis landclass. The area around my home is now depicted accurately as suburbia (with previous landclasses it was all forest). I would still like to use the FSGenesis landclass outside of metro areas, and I understand there is a patch or procedure in the works for that. The trade-off for me has been the hit the the amount of autogen you get with all of the features dialed-up. I've settled on displaying only the textures and lights for major roads, rather than residential roads. I'm fine with not showing the textures (it gets a bit unrealistic looking to me in combination with the default city textures that already have roads in them), but I do wish I could have more lights. I understand the limitation though. There's also (rarely) some airports or buildings in the water, due to the miscplaced original features.

Looks good BUT I have never seen Phoenix looking so green. The textures for the airport put green everywhere - also the hills to the south and the Camelback are covered in green. Never looked like thiat in real life. Area round Tucson doesn't look like desert either. Don't get me wrong - its good stuff overall but unrealistic in the areas I mentioned at first look.KFD

Allen has fixed the landclass to show desert textures in the same areas that MS displays them. It should be in the update in a few days.Tony

Hi and thx for replies! So. I installed first the mesh (FSGenesis)and then the UT . I wasn't stlll happy with that.. So I installed from avsim the KBOS 1.1 and was ready for a try..1. A PSS A319 from KBOS to KJFK: A Nice start. After about 30 mins of flying, already descending with PLYMM.4 appr. Just to Wimdows...I am not that lame.. I decided to test the scenery with FlightOne's C172 flying around Boston.. A black screen and a msg: Mod:unknown.. already when lining up..So I wouldnt give up yet.. going to Minnessota/St.Paul and taking a flight with the C172 aforementioned... Nice evening.. beautiful lights.. highways, streets.. a lively area. Landing to RedWings having seen the best of the views on Earth... So.. Is this KBOS too heavy for my specs (XP+3000, 1.256GB, ...Radeon 9800Pro...) or is there maybe an error with the KBOS I installed.. ?Anyway: The next thing I will do is to get a good map over the USA and then just try to see something..RegardsPetteriEFHK
