September 5, 201510 yr Vector only helps outside the regions you have installed. If I were you, I would get PNW, and NorCal next. So I'm better off just purchasing the regions, and forgetting Vector for now. I'm trying to get most of the Alaska scenery right now, because I plan on doing a lot of flying up there now. How about the Open LC NA Alaska/Canada? And the Pacific Fjords? -= Gary Barth =-
September 5, 201510 yr Correct.. if you mainly fly in Regions, that is all you need. You already have Global, so that is good. Pacific Fjords is very nice! Bert
September 5, 201510 yr So where do the Open LC items come in? If you have the regions? -= Gary Barth =-
September 5, 201510 yr So where do the Open LC items come in? If you have the regions? The regions are full fat, the advantages of Regions is they have everything included but at a higher price and a smaller area. Open LC covers a much much lager area but with lesser detail. Personally, i fly low and slow and shortish journeys so for me the regions are perfect, some folks like the Open LC cause they fly much longer and bang for buck the LC suits them better I only use Global and Regions, Global for my big airports because its recommend and Regions because they have all the detail and there gorgeously beautiful
September 5, 201510 yr I think there is a bit of a misconception re Open LC and the so-called "full fat regions". the full fat regions such as Alaska South, PNW, etc include everything that you will ever need. They also include their own mesh already. If you buy one of the two available Open LC versions (one is Europe, one is now Alaska/Canada), you will have a less detailed coverage of the area. But the area is much bigger. In order to bring them to life, you still want to buy vector and a decent mesh. And still after you have done that, they are not yet as detailed as the full fat regions. That is why if you love flying low and slow in an amazing area, stick with Alaska and all other such regions ORBX offers you. Then add a few of their specific airports, such as Stewart, Juneau, Ketchikan etc and I promise you, you cannot be happier. Btw, around Xmas time, many of our favorite sites offer partly steep discounts. That's usually the time, when I really do shop for interesting airports I did not buy before  Elaine, you beat me to it   Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwinds My specs: AMD Radeon RX6700XT, AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, 32GB RAM, 34" monitor, screen resolution: 2560x1080
September 5, 201510 yr Elaine, you beat me to it We both said the same thing but yours is more understandable
September 5, 201510 yr One other thing that OpenLC brings to the table is more consistency with 'full fat' Regions when you are neighboring those regions - the so-called `hybrid` mode. Without it, you can see a quite noticeable change when you leave the Region, like a seam or a very obvious border. With it, the transition is usually seamless.
September 6, 201510 yr So it seems to me that the progression is FTX Global, openLC NA Alaska/Canada, the regions (Alaska South, Pacific Fjords, Pacific Northwest, etc), and then the specific airports (Juneau, Ketchikan, etc.). No real need for Vector unless you're flying outside the aforementioned areas. But if you're using the airports, then the areas are a must, right? And so far, there are only 6 NA regions, right? So I think for the time being, I'll stick with the northern regions and enjoy Alaska, and then move down into the "states" later. One last question: all of the regions seem to be in the northwest, so what regions support the airports in the rest of the U.S,? Don't the airports need a supporting region to work properly? -= Gary Barth =-
September 6, 201510 yr Orbx started in Australia and then continued in the NW of the US. Many freeware Orbx airports exist outside the regions and work just fine. Also some payware airports like Sonoma and Palm Springs. They do need Global to blend in properly, but that is it. Bert

Yes, that's about it, as long as you are not flying in coastal or water-laden regions (Vector adds more realistic and representative coastlines, rivers, lakes among other things). Don't even think you need open LC NA Alaska/Canada unless you are looking to improve the landclass designation OUTSIDE the Region, or need to 'manage the merge' between the two. Just Global as your base, then choice of Region(s). Is all you need. That said, Canada is a bit dull without OpenLC NA and Vector.
September 7, 201510 yr Well, I thought I'd still get Vector for the rest of the areas I fly in, mostly the lower states, and in and around PA. So I picked that up, along with Pacific Fjords (for Ketchikan), Ketchikan, and Juneau. Already have Southern Alaska, so that new stuff ought to bring me some very nice scenery to fly my new A2A Comanche around in. Gonna have a fun Labor Day installing all of these goodies! -= Gary Barth =-
December 6, 20169 yr Late to the topic For me flying without the Orbx FTX Global addons is like going to a wedding wearing jeans and a tee shirt. You can do it but it just doesn't feel right.
