Airport Elevations (Plateau)

Hello Dan and Dave,

 

I know the subject of Plateau's is covered in the Original FreeMeshX announcement, but I just wanted further clarification.

I recently purchased ORBX Ireland and if I use FreeMeshX with ORBX Ireland, there is a fairly drastic plateau for EIKN (Knock Airport)

 

In ADE, the ORBX airport is the correct elevation, but the FreemeshX elevation seems a lot lower.

I'm not complaining! it still looks amazing and all, I just wanted to know if there's a solution to this. Like a set of BGL's that the community could create to 'fix' these issues specific to ORBX regions?

 

(btw, ORBX vector doesn't help. If I 'enable' AEC for EIKN, the airport sinks into the ground)

if I uncheck FMX, the airport blends in perfectly with the (orbx?) default mesh.

 

Any advice on this?

Those airport plateaus are a pain - Dan had a few thoughts on these, I expect he'll chime in. With ORBX off, running FreeMeshX alone, this plateau still exists or is it unique to the combination of both?

The default EIKN doesn't work all that well with FMX as some parts of the runway are underground, and the FTX Vector AEC for EIKN does indeed sink it into the ground! Not the greatest AEC, but at least the runway doesn't protrude through the dirt.

 

Unlike some other FTX regions, it seems FTX Ireland doesn't include any mesh data, so the airports in this FTX product were probably designed to work with the stock mesh.

 

I wonder if any freeware AFCADS for EIKN provide a better elevation correction?

I really like  FTX Vector together with your mod but because of its use in my going is not correct change navigation information(data) Airport...

Not true frequency of ILS, is not the right course the runway ...

I use the latest patch FSX / P3D World Navaids package ( http://www.aero.sors.fr/navaids3.html )but it does not help me because the files FTX Vector prioretety above and cause conflicts ...

I'm not sure honestly. You can can install the ILS updates by moving the APT_*.bgl files elsewhere, but if you put them back I think the airport corrections will still conflict. This may be best asked at the Orbx forums since they will know better about FTX Vector.

The stock LPMA is at an alarmingly wrong altitude (711 ft.), the real one is at 192 feet. That's why you see that impressive airport mountain. :wink:

 

You could try "lpma_328666.zip" from the AVSIM library, it is not super eye candy, but it places the airport at a more correct altitude.

Not using ORBX but I ran into the same problem at HAAB.

My temp workaround using ADEX was to add a grass apron around the entire airfield to expand the hole out a bit and make things more landable.

The only drawback I can see so far is when it rains the grass starts showing reflections also like the runways do.

FSX or P3D don't handle sloping terrain, so airports are perfectly flat. In the case of Aviano, without FTX Vectors corrections, one end of the runway aligns with the terrain perfectly. However, since the terrain slopes downward, the other end of the runway lies on a hill above the terrain since the airport cannot slope downwards.

 

The airport lines up perfectly with the stock mesh because the stock mesh is frankly erroneous, and the airport elevation was designed to work with it.

 

With FTX Vectors corrections, the airport sinks beneath the terrain (not good), so I recommend disabling the airport elevation correction for this particular airport.

 

One of these days, Lockheed Martin will fix this problem with flat airports. Somehow in 4+ years they haven't gotten around to it even though it is fairly major in my opinion.

It's normal for all airports to be flat, so its hard for airports to align with the terrain correctly when there is a slope. One of these days, we won't have to deal with flat airports anymore. X-Plane, for example, has sloping airports.

Currently, that is the ONLY solution. If it's addon scenery, check with the developer as they may have found a workround.

No it isn't. Anyone can adjust the airport elevations to match the surrounding mesh, if they wish.

Dear,

 

When using FSX + SP1 + SP2, Cali airport (SKCL) is at 2500 ft. elevation and there is no problem because the area around is also at the same wrong elevation.

 

When using FreeMesh, the stock airport maintains at 2500ft, but the landscape go to correct 3160 ft. 

 

Is it possible to correct the airport elevation?

Do you own any programs that offer airport elevation corrections such as FTX Vectors? We don't have the ability to offer airport elevation corrections ourselves at this time.

Could you vive us a quick outline as to waht to do? Not fair to ask for a full blown tutorial. But a general idea would allow us to stsrt making tha corrections. Can these corrections be saved and reapplied if, for example, there was a reinstall?

But ... LSTJ (Capt Oriel Lea Plaza Intl. at Tarija, Bolivia) is on a "plateau". With FSX default scenery or with FlightSim SLTJ scenery, I obtain same result. Only the airport itself = runway and tarmac is seen "high above" the surrounding area.

When I de-activate FMX Central & South America, the airport+tarmac, both default and the FlightSim, returns to normal.

 

Is there something I can do to correct this ? Thanks in advance.

Dirk, default South America terrain is crap.  The area around SLTJ is not accurate, and the airport's elevation is set to match this non-accurate elevation. So when you install FMX, it updates the terrain to higher resolution and greater accuracy. But the airport's elevation is still set to match the old, crap terrain. You will need some airport elevation correction to fix this issue.This is why I recommend FTX Vectors, since it puts many objects at their proper location (rivers, lakes, and airports).

FTX Vectors is produced by ORBX at www.fullterrain.com. It has a lot of cool features, but it's not the cheapest thing in the world either :(
