FS2004+Google Earth+MyFSGoogle Earth=AWESOME!

Featured Replies

Hi guys,I too just tried MyFsGoogleEarth. Searched AVSIM for it (not knowing its name) but all they have is an app that renders your flightplan in GoogleEarth. Neat but not what I was looking for. A google search turned up the homepage for MyFsGoogleEarth and off I went.I don't know how much I'll use it. I sure got a kick out of it first use though. As long as I ran FS9 in a window on one monitor (my projector heheh) and GE on the other it worked alright - even all on one system. (I'm running an eMachine C2480: AthlonXP 2400, 1GB, 128 MB ATI Radeon 9600XT).One thing I learned while departing Puerto Rico - for the British Virgin Islands - is that FS9's default rendering of the scenery ain't half bad. I don't know what LOD it is but I was impressed. (Terrain mesh and texture size full right; Scenery objects extreme density).I've pasted an email about it, that I just sent to a few buddies, below. Readon if you care too:JELBPasted email...Guys,The attached picture is way cool. I downloaded a freeapp that links FS2004 to Google Earth. LOL. I had bothopen while I was setting it all up. Well, as I wasconfiguring it all, going through the various steps,my airplane's icon appeared! LOL. IT WORKS! thought I.Amazingly neat. Then, as I continued the configuration, some AIaircraft icons appeared in the area! IT REALLY WORKS!Way cool. With everything setup I checked out Denver'sinternational airport and Heathrow. I am chuckling asI write this cause it was just so neat (at Heathrow)to see an airliner's icon appear in GE just as itlifted off the runway in FS9. IT REALLY REALLY WORKS!LOL.Tuning to the tower I heard a few liners calling in ontheir approaches. Spinning and tilting GE's maprevealed that they were indeed coming in. (I couldn'tsee well from my aircraft as it was parked facing abuilding).Speaking of being parked... I opened a top down viewin FS9 and, once I set it to always be north oriented, zoomed in/out to match GE's zoom level. Well damned ifeach rendering of Heathrow didn't match pretty darnwell. I did notice at least one gate extension in GEthat isn't in FS9. Still, not bad. The same accuracyheld true for Denver.Next I decided to do an FSEconomy flight in thecaribbean. I wanted to fly into Beef Island Airport inthe British Virgin Islands (TUPJ) as I'd justinstalled scenery there. After a bit I found a flightI could do in a little over an hour flight time. WellI took off and, after fiddling with the linking app'ssettings a bit, had the view in GE pretty muchmatching my height and heading - with a littleaircraft icon out front, marking my projectedwhereabouts one minute in the future. LOL. What a hootthat flight was!I flew out of PR24 in Puerto Rico and headed alongthe south coast. GE was configured to show airportsand I soon noticed more than I expected. Checking FS9I found, looking around, that, indeed, there beairports there! GE marked city/town names too andwhenever I came across one, sure enough, there wassome semblance of it in FS9.One thing I learned about FS9, that GE revealed to me,is that FS9's default scenery is pretty darn good. Imean, I didn't install any addons for Puerto Rico yetthe coastline, while not perfect, was pretty darngood. I was impressed! It caused me to consider thatmaybe FS9's terrain detail doesn't need to beimproved as much as I thought.Getting back to my flight. Heheh. As I flew I noticedtwo things: first, a lack of any other aircraft flyingabout; and second, little non-aircraft icons in thedistance. Well... to my delight as I flew on it turnedout that those were aircraft far away. When they gotcloser their icons changed to the airplane type yousee in the jpg. I zoomed in on two and they weresubsidiaries of AA - American Eagle I think - and propjobs! DC3s maybe. Really really neat. One more thing: this program causes me to think thatthere's probably a similar one that places real worldaircraft markers into GE. Hmmm. The mind boggles.

I just cant wait till you can import the 3d building from google earth into FS and texture them. Personal I think this would be the best thing to take from google earth and not the ground textures. We already have some good to great utility programs for road, lake, stream, coastlines and railroads but the 3d building that seems to be very accurate is something that we are missing for auto gen. Imagine having ultimate terrain with the all the roads in the big cities and instead of them on top of texture files mocking roads where building really are, actual building cover up the areas so that the roads seem more real.Since the road and coastline data is the same that google earth uses then the 3d building should all be in place and it would look wrong at all. Some developer has got to get that working and just texture those grey buildings with genric building textures.Use the two photos attached as exampleshttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/129048.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/129049.jpg

I cannot connect to the web pages. You said "Most critical is to make sure you get the port numbers right in MyFSGoogleEarth". How do you get the right port numbers?

I have a question for you about this. Will you get satalite imagery in fs using mygoogleearth as your flying instead of the generic fs scenery or is this just a tracking a flight program using mygoogleearth program. It would be cool if it actually could render your textures to the real scenery as you fly. Any info would be great. I did install Google earth yesturday and had more fun with it. It really is amazing of all the features it has. The only thing I found disappointing is when you have 3d buildings it looks like fs that has lost the textures to the buildings.

Bump

Great gadget for one use. Gets boring after that. Uninstalled.

Depends on what you want. I use it all the time, mostly for scenery development, but also just to explore and compare Fs to the real world. It's also useful for analyzing flights (capture gps track and convert to .kml), checking out airspace limits (there are lots of mapping tools out there, including a bunch of stuff Matt Fox has kindly given to the community http://www.fox-fam.com/wordpress/), and more.I think it's awesome.Thomas[a href=http://www.flyingscool.com] http://www.flyingscool.com/images/Signature.jpg [/a]I like using VC's :-)N15802 KASH '73 Piper Cherokee Challenger 180

I just programmed what you are asking for ;-) Search the forums for Google Earth, it's a few pages back and includes screenshots. Unfortunately this software cannot be publicized due to legal issues. Google won't allow use of their satellite imagery outside of their proprietary Google Earth viewer application.
