May 7, 201610 yr Just want to confirm that all works fine in my sim. Some little files - great effect! Thanks to Carlyle. Harald Geyer Gründer der Messerschmitt Freunde Dresden v. V.
May 8, 201610 yr navtech, Please don;t take this badly, as I am only trying to be helpful., but when you added the .OFF to the four files you did add " dot ADD" didn't you? Just a thought ! RegT No fuss As usual for me I renamed as: xxxxxxxx_OR.bgl (OR for original) I don't know any scenery that conflict (AFAIK) Anyways .. not a big deal
May 8, 201610 yr If you continue to use the suffix .bgl, the file is still active...! Harald Geyer Gründer der Messerschmitt Freunde Dresden v. V.

June 10, 20169 yr According to a report dated today on the BBC's website St Helena airport's opening has been delayed indefinitely due to high winds setting off wind shear warnings in aircraft. So if you are an extreme sim aficionado than you won't be able to use the scenery!!!! Dijvid
June 10, 20169 yr As an addendum to my above post it would now seem that no-one has any idea when the airport will open. Could that be "if" rather than "when"? I'm rather surprised that the problem with winds wasn't realised before - after all cliffs, mountains and other "obstructions" of Mother Nature are well known for creating weather abnormalities. I wonder if the SS St Helena will be pressed on for further duties? Meanwhile, the cost [uK£285] to the UK [where I live] of developing the airport might turn out to be yet another white elephant - and we've had more than a few of those in the past!! Dijvid
June 10, 20169 yr Well, luckily enough, my airport is already open. It is not subject to adverse winds nor any political wrangling. It turns out that on my sim, the cost of the airport was most reasonable ..... and my passengers are quite happy with the airport (but not necessarily my flying). Sometimes "as real as it gets" isn't quite so nice as fantasy! Ya just gotta luv this island!
June 10, 20169 yr Maybe the airport itself has changed the local wind conditions? Who knows how wheather changes after opening of BER... Harald Geyer Gründer der Messerschmitt Freunde Dresden v. V.
June 10, 20169 yr Maybe the airport itself has changed the local wind conditions? Even if it has it doesn't get away from the fact that "St Helena - we have a problem"!! Dijvid It turns out that on my sim, the cost of the airport was most reasonable ..... Yeah, and it didn't come out of my taxes!!!! Dijvid
June 10, 20169 yr Comair have apparently got cold feet about landing their 737-700's and -800's there now. The PPRUNE forum thread on St. Helena now has quite a few comments along the lines of "real pilots can hand-fly 737's into Leeds/Bradford, Madeira, Funchal, Gibraltar and Wellington (NZ), so why not St. Helena?" All the above airports are subject to adverse winds and turbulence similar those at St. Helena, though none have relatively short runways with no thresholds and 1000ft drops into deep water at both ends! Interesting comment although I wouldn't pay too much attention to PPRUNE. It is, after all, only a rumour network and whenever there is a disaster there are threads going for innumerable pages with everyone having their own idea of what caused the crash instead of waiting for the black box findings to be published. True, there are lots of videos on YouTube showing the most incredible landings in windy weather - but consider this. Should one of them end in disaster those airports have masses of emergency services to call on, air ambulances are available for the critically injured and there are usually plenty of hospitals and ambulances to call upon as well. How would St Helena cope if 100 plus pax were badly injured in a 737 coming to grief and especially if an aircraft carried on past the end of the runway and down those cliffs? And aborting take off just before V1 doesn't bear considering. I think that whatever Comair decide it could be a matter of "damned if they do and damned if they don't", to say nothing of the fact that their insurers mightn't be too happy about the situation either. June 11, 20169 yr Author There is a scenery by Carlyle Sharpe file name FS9_St_Helena_Island.zip also an update and mesh for the island, south atlantic1.zip.

Dijvid I am not at all surprised . . . the airport is something of a local joke although the residents are desperate for ways to improve their economy. It has suffered bad planning (or total lack of) since day one. I think the big issue is not the ability of the pilots but the distance to the nearest diversionary airport in Angola in relation to the amount of fuel in the aircraft. One ambulance flight has been made, so the airport is technically operational - just not for jets. The RMS St Helena (tsk tsk, not SS) is already on its way back after "finishing" in London and will arrive there on 28th June (via Ascension Island) to resume operations, although these will be at a reduced frequency as the cargo ship operation contract is already in place.
