September 15, 201510 yr I know this may sound odd but I was just flying with the sun in front of me, up in Alaska, and it was setting and I got to thinking. Has anyone ever set up the correct time and place to see if FSX will show a total eclipse? Jack Sawyer

Well then I learned something. I only questioned it because I have never personally saw them nor have I ever seen anyone take a snapshot or post a video with them present. -Jim Engage, research, inform and make your posts count! -Jim Morvay Origin EON-17SLX - Under the hood: Intel Core i7 7700K at 4.2GHz (Base) 4.6GHz (overclock), nVidia GeForce GTX-1080 Pascal w/8gb vram, 32gb (2x16) Crucial 2400mhz RAM, 3840 x 2160 17.3" IPS w/G-SYNC, Samsung 950 EVO 256GB PCIe m.2 SSD (Primary), Samsung 850 EVO 500gb M.2 (Sim Drive), MS Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit

Google it and you'll find some YouTube videos showing it as well as some spotting tips. Shooting stars are a bit harder to catch, just like in real life. Also, FSX has some active volcanos that errupt. Plus there is also a freeware add on that will as forest fires if you want to check out the action on the west that is going on now. September 15, 201510 yr Author I wonder if it's still possible though to see an eclipse. I wouldn't know how to go about doing but but wouldn't you find out when one happened and place yourself there? I mean, the moon I have is the real moon thanks to NickN and if the celestial mechanics are correctly modeled in FSX you'd at least see the moon cover the sun right? Maybe not get dark but just cover it. Jack Sawyer
September 15, 201510 yr Author Ok, thanks JS, I just thought it might be neat. So now I learned several things today. Best regards. Jack Jack Sawyer

Jack Sorry Jack, I guess I wasn't clear enough when I replied before and said it wasn't modeled in FSX. I figured that meant that meant it was not possible since it was not modeled. FSX does a lot of things, but that is beyond the scope. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
September 15, 201510 yr I doubt that FSX would be able to simulate a solar eclipse. Some rather complex calculations need to be performed to accurately determine the position of the Moon in Earth's sky. Anyway, I have just checked this for the 1999 August 11 total solar eclipse in south west England, and it was not visible in P3D. Nevertheless, it would be extremely cool to see this in a flight simulator. September 15, 201510 yr Author Thanks again everyone. You've been a really great help. Appreciate it. Thanks Christopher, I would have done the same thing you did but don't have the time right now. Yes, I guess it would require a lot of calcualtions, I was just curious in an offhand way as I was flying. Jack Sawyer
